Today I had both the privilege and honour to witness history, as family, friends, and colleagues said au revoir, see you again, as we celebrated Senator Mobina Jaffer‘s 23 remarkable years of service at the Senate of Canada.

As she embarks on her next chapter with her family and close friends, she ends a series of chapters which included a number of firsts.
In a heartwarming and tear jerking session at the Senate today, colleagues paid tribute, shared personal stories and memories, and reminded us that she is, the first Muslim senator, the first African-born senator, and the first senator of South Asian descent. She was also the first South Asian woman to practice law in Canada.

Among these firsts, she is also the first to be there when you need anything, a smile, a hug, a shoulder, a guide, a mentor, and above all, a voice for the voiceless.

She was and continues to be a trail blazer, and embodies kindness, respect, humility, promotes diversity, inclusivity and plurality.

I am honoured to be a part of her Ottawa family, and while she may be retiring from the day to day activities of being a Senator, I know she will not stop being a positive influence, inspiring others to be their best, and represent Canadian Ismaili Muslims of Indian African descent on the world stage.

Congratulations Mobina! by @rahimcharania
