Mayoora Nritham (also spelled Mayura Nritham) literally translates to the Peacock Dance. It is a traditional and highly visual folk-art form common in the South Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu (where it is often called Mayilattam).
Deeply rooted in Hindu mythology, this dance is primarily performed as a tribute to Lord Subrahmanya (also known as Murugan or Kartikeya), whose divine vehicle (vahana) is the peacock.
🎭 Key Characteristics
Symbolism: The dance celebrates Lord Subrahmanya’s victory over the demon Tarakasura and his triumphant return to Mount Kailasa.
Costume & Makeup: * Performers wear vibrant, colorful costumes that mimic the plumage of a peacock.
A significant feature is the attachment of peacock feathers to the dancer’s dress, often arranged to look like a fan or a bird's tail.
In many Kerala performances, the facial makeup and headgear take inspiration from Kathakali, giving the dancer a majestic, god-like appearance. taken in Thrissur by @rahul_radhakrishnan__
