“‘Mujhe lag raha hai main kisi Bollywood film mein hun…’ That’s what Aai said when I took her for a drive in a BMW across the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. It was her first time in a car like that and honestly, growing up with limited means… uske liye woh ek dream come true moment tha.
I come from a lower middle-class family where, for four generations, nobody was educated and nobody owned a house in Bombay. My grandfather worked in a masala factory, Dadi sold vegetables on the street, Papa has been a driver all his life, and Aai… she’s been a homemaker, quietly holding everything together. They gave us everything they could – haan, picnics, aur fancy kapdon ke liye kabhi mana kiya hoga, but Aai-Baba never compromised on anything that mattered for our future.
But I wasn’t that studious kid people expected a lot from. I studied in college, half-heartedly, and eventually dropped out. At that time, it felt like I had really let my family down. Still, somewhere deep down, I believed I’d figure it out. I remember my first interview so clearly – when they asked what I could do beyond my resume, I told them I could rap… and performed right there. That moment changed everything and got me my first job.
I spent the next 3 years producing events, learning as I went. Today, I’ve been a talent manager for 4 years – working with comedians, actors, musicians… people I once only watched on screen.
My brother, on the other hand, became a fitness trainer and got the opportunity to work with names like Manish Paul and Tiger Shroff. Together, we’ve been able to do something that once felt completely impossible – we bought not just one, but two houses in Bombay.
That BMW ride was in one of his client’s cars. But for my Aai, it was magic. As soon as we got off, she said, ‘Yehi wali gaadi lena.’ I laughed and said, ‘Arrey Aai, woh bahot mehengi hai…’ but in our hearts, we both knew – hum dono bhai kar lenge. Abhi toh bas shuruat hai.” by @rahul_shirkar
