Possibly Unidentia sp 🇲🇻

A tiny aeolid nudibranch originally described from Bali, Indonesia, in 2017. It lives among stones and algae covered in hydroids, which are thought to be its prey. Like other aeolids, its cerata contain specialised sacs that store stinging cells taken from its prey, helping it defend itself against predators. The thin purple stripe running down the body and the banded cerata make this a really interesting candidate for the species. Still comparing the details, but it could be a fascinating find here in the Maldives. 🔍🌊

Tenellia sp. 🧡 A tiny aeolid nudibranch that hunts hydroids, and some species can steal their prey’s stinging cells and store them in their cerata for defence. Basically, it turns its food into its own little weapon system. ⚡🪼

Hypselodoris nigrostriata is a striking nudibranch known for its bold dark stripes running across a bright yellow to bluish body. It is found across parts of the Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific, where it moves slowly over the reef searching for its preferred food—sponges. Like many colourful nudibranchs, it can take chemical defenses from its sponge diet, making it less appealing to predators. Its bright colours and unique pattern make it easy to recognize once you know what to look for, and its flowing gills and rhinophores give it that classic Hypselodoris look

Glossodoris rufomarginata is a striking nudibranch known for its vivid colours and bold mantle pattern. It’s usually found crawling over coral reefs and rocky areas in tropical Indo-Pacific waters, where it feeds mainly on sponges. Like many dorid nudibranchs, it stores chemical compounds from its sponge prey, helping make it less appealing to predators. Its bright colours and contrasting margins make it one of those nudibranchs that can be surprisingly easy to spot once you know what you’re looking for

Favorinus tsuruganus is a nudibranch with a taste unlike most others—it feeds almost exclusively on the egg ribbons of other sea slugs. Found on coral reefs and rocky habitats across the western Pacific, this striking species stands out with its translucent body, glowing orange digestive glands, and bold black-tipped cerata and rhinophores. Like many nudibranchs, it can regenerate lost cerata after escaping predators, allowing it to recover both its appearance and important defensive structures. Small, beautiful, and surprisingly resilient

Moridilla maldivensis, so far, has only been recorded in the Maldives, making it an endemic species. It hides beneath coral rubble during the day and is believed to be mostly nocturnal. Like other members of the genus Moridilla, it’s thought to feed on hydroids—tiny colonial animals closely related to jellyfish. Its pale orange cerata and distinctive white bands set it apart from every other known species in the genus.

Tenellia melanobrachia is a coral-eating nudibranch that often takes on the colours of the corals it feeds on. Individuals feeding on orange cup corals become bright orange, while those feeding on darker corals can turn deep green or almost black. If they switch to a different coral, their colours gradually change to match, giving them incredible camouflage.

One of the ocean’s best examples of “you are what you eat.” Tiny, specialized, and almost invisible until you know exactly where to look. 🔍🌊

Meet Thorunna horologia—a tiny sponge-feeding nudibranch with a crisp white mantle, bright orange margin, and vivid orange rhinophores and gills. While most individuals are predominantly white, some display delicate purple hues around the mouth or tail. The exact cause of this pigmentation remains unknown, and it is currently considered a natural variation rather than a direct result of their sponge diet.

A tiny aeolid nudibranch hiding among the hydroids it calls home. With its translucent body, dark cerata, and touches of blue and yellow, this little predator is perfectly adapted for life on the reef. Feeding on hydroids and recycling their stinging cells for protection, it’s proof that some of the ocean’s most fascinating creatures are also the smallest.
