With the news of Yayoi Kusama’s passing, I am revisiting these images I made with The Electric Canvas for Vivid Sydney 2009. Her unmistakable world of dots transformed the façade of the Museum of Contemporary Art.

An extraordinary artist, and an extraordinary life devoted to art.

Vale Yayoi Kusama, 1929–2026.

Beauty Rich and Rare — an immersive exhibition commissioned by the National Library of Australia, made with AGB Events in 2018.

The 20-minute experience traced the story of Joseph Banks and James Cook on the first voyage of the discovery onboard the Endeavour into the southern hemisphere, exploring the extraordinary encounters with landscape, flora and the natural world that followed.

Using large-scale projection, sound and immersive visual storytelling, the exhibition moved between historical material, botanical imagery and a more atmospheric interpretation of discovery, observation and wonder.

A project that brought together history, art and technology to create a journey through one of the defining expeditions of the eighteenth century.

Delhi, 2012 — Opening Ceremony for OzFest, Australia’s major cultural festival in India presented by DFAT.

The opening brought together an extraordinary group of artists, including Gurrumul Yunupingu, Anoushka Shankar and Mark Atkins, in a large-scale celebration of Australian and Indian culture.

With then Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard in attendance, the ceremony marked the beginning of a major program of performance, music, visual arts and cultural exchange across India.

Another memorable project from the archives, and a reminder of the scale and ambition of cultural diplomacy when artists are placed at its centre.

Doha, 2006 — Asian Games Opening Ceremony.

At the time, this was genuinely leading-edge projection technology: 44 PIGI large-format scrolling projectors working together to transform the entire field of play with vast projected imagery.

Long before today’s high-resolution digital projection and real-time media workflows, PIGI used large-format scrolling artwork and precision optical projection to create imagery at an extraordinary scale. It was a very different technology, but one capable of producing spectacular results across a stadium environment.

Looking back twenty years later, it is remarkable to see how much the technology has changed, while the ambition remains much the same: using light, image and scale to transform architecture and space as part of a live performance.

A great project to revisit from the archives.
