Fly with us as we take a tour through the Kauffman Academic Residential Center, home of the Raikes School, at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Designed to provide a "live-and-learn" experience, the Kauffman Center fosters a close-knit community of intellectually curious students. The building features state-of-the-art facilities, including classrooms, study lounges, meeting spaces, and a game room. Conveniently located in the heart of Nebraska's city campus, the Kauffman Center offers suite-style living with private bedrooms and bathrooms, and dedicated faculty and advisors supporting students through their academic and professional journey.

The annual Raikes School Career Fair kicked off last week with nearly 40 employers throughout the Kauffman Center. Students connected with cutting-edge companies including Garmin, HDR, Hudl, John Deere, Kiewit, and Mutual of Omaha exploring opportunities in business, computer science, data science, software engineering, and beyond.

A huge thank you to all of the employers who joined us and invested their time to build relationships with students! Please help us welcome the record 60 students selected to join Cohort 2026 at the Jeffrey S. Raikes School of Computer Science and Management!

The 2026 cohort includes 40 students from Nebraska and 20 students from Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, Pennsylvania, South Dakota and Texas.

The Raikes School welcomed its first students in 1999 and has grown into a nationally recognized interdisciplinary honors program at Nebraska. Applications for the 2027 cohort are currently open and are due by Nov 15.

Though the launch only lasted a few minutes, getting to the International Rocket Engineering Competition was a yearlong effort from Caleb and the rest of the @unl_rocketry team.

The minutes leading up to the actual launch were full of tweaks that put the team’s nerves into overdrive and called on everything they’d learned up until that point. But it was all worth it in the end — their perfect flight placed the team 7th out of 141 schools from around the world, a record high. For Caleb, not only was the successful competition gratifying, it also felt like a test run for his dream career.

“I'm a big space geek and I really want to work in space engineering, so being able to build a rocket as a team of students is super, super cool to me. When we’re at the actual launch site in Texas, you feel like you’re in your own mini mission control center. It makes you feel like this career is really possible.”

To close out another incredible year, the Raikes School celebrated Design Studio and Startup Studio students at the annual Design Studio Showcase Awards! Nominated by their peers, coaches, and sponsors, these teams were recognized not only for the quality of their work, but also for the resilience and collaboration they demonstrated throughout the year.

On April 20th, the Raikes School welcomed Thomas Rockwell, the Chief Creative Officer at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, as the school’s annual spring speaker. In a speech centered around the intersection of science, religion, and art, Rockwell championed human-centric creativity and design in a quickly evolving landscape. In addition to his time at the Raikes School, Rockwell assisted the Kiewit Luminarium with an upcoming exhibit during his time in Nebraska.

We are grateful to have so many inspiring leaders and creatives share their perspectives with our students. These insights challenge us to think more deeply about the role of innovation, curiosity, and humanity in shaping the future.

✨Volunteer Feature✨
 @girlscodelincoln is a 100% volunteer run organization that teaches 4th-9th grade girls about technology through creativity, community, collaboration, and building confidence. With their computer programming focus, it is no surprise that many Raikes School students and staff are very involved with clubs, from leading welcome activities, taking pictures, and, of course, being there to help the girls one-on-one when they have questions or run into issues. We are so proud of the time and energy our community dedicates to empowering the next generation of female coders!

SENIOR SPOTLIGHTS 2026: @alison.lenaghan, @amir.atarkian

We asked these seniors: What accomplishment are you most proud of from your time at Nebraska?

Alison Lenaghan: “I am most proud of the strong connections I have built while successfully balancing work, actuarial exams, and school. Managing all of these responsibilities has helped me grow both personally and professionally. I am extremely proud in the internship experiences I have had the opportunity to pursue as well as the 4 actuarial exams I have passed during my time at UNL.”

Amir Tarkian: “The Raikes School has the opportunity for students to pitch their own projects for Startup Studio to fulfill their senior capstone. This has been the most rewarding experience building a software startup (Creevo) from just an idea and developing it to where we are now with over a thousand users.”

We’ve loved having these seniors around for the past four years, and we’re so excited to see all that they are able to accomplish in the next phase of their journeys!

We asked these seniors: Why should a prospective student come to Nebraska and the Raikes School?

Harith Himdan: “The Raikes School and the University of Nebraska offer incredible connections with classmates and faculty that turn into lasting friendships and professional relationships. The program also provides strong career opportunities through hands-on projects and actual connections that really prepare you for success after graduation.”

Peyton Peck: “There is no other program in Nebraska like the Raikes School. Full of passionate, smart students, learning alongside Nebraska’s brightest will excel your social, academic, and industry abilities. My favorite part of the Raikes School was meeting some of my best friends (including my fiancé) who share similar interests in software, sports, and in life. I have never felt as surrounded by likeminded people as I have at the Raikes School. Being able to walk downstairs to my classes is pretty awesome too.”

Kevin Tran: “Nebraska and the Raikes School are one of the few places where technology, business, and innovation all come together in a hands-on way. You are constantly working on real projects that push you beyond coding and make you consider how your ideas work in the real world. Most importantly for me, the people you meet and the friends you make throughout end up being the best part.”
