Erewhon is where you go to be seen. Not where you go to be healthy.$20 smoothies. $38 per pound salmon. $14 juices in glass jars. Celebrity endorsements on every cooler door. Hailey Bieber has her own smoothie. So does every other influencer in LA. The store is beautiful. The products are organic. The quality is real. Nobody is denying that. But Erewhon is not a health food store. It is a luxury brand that sells health as an aesthetic. The same organic avocado you can buy at a farmers market for $2 costs $5 at Erewhon because it’s sitting under designer lighting on a perfectly organized shelf next to a $12 kombucha. You’re not paying for the food. You’re paying for the experience of being in the same room as people who look like they belong on a magazine cover. The store was founded in 1968 as an actual health food store. Then private equity took over in 2011 and turned it into a status symbol. They expanded across every wealthy neighborhood in LA. Beverly Hills. Calabasas. Santa Monica. Venice. Palisades. 10 locations and growing. All in areas where the average home costs $2 million. Meanwhile 95% of Los Angeles can’t afford to shop there. Health food should be accessible not exclusive. Rainbow Acres has been selling organic food on the westside since 1981 for half the price with staff that has worked there for decades. Local farms sell the same produce for a third of what Erewhon charges. Your farmers market has everything Erewhon has without the markup and without the influencer tax. Stop paying for a brand. Easy recipe for sea moss jam with soursop: soak dry Irish Sea moss overnight and rinse thoroughly. Add to cooking pot with just enough water to cover.
