THE DAY INNOCENCE DIED: BLOODY SUNDAY AND THE FIGHT FOR JUSTICE
Dir. Hannan Majid and Richard York 2026, UK. 106m

Derry, January 1972; As the civil rights movement across the North of Ireland begins to secure unprecedented wins, the British state responds with lethal force, murdering 14 of its citizens and sparking a 60 year fight for justice and accountability by a community for whom everything had changed.
From the acclaimed directors of ‘To Kill a War Machine’, and the community campaigners who took on the British state and won, ‘The Day Innocence Died’ tells the story of the Bloody Sunday massacre and its legacy, weaving unheard testimonies and rarely seen archive footage into an epic cinematic documentary.
“Bloody Sunday was a massacre of people who were marching for justice for their fellow citizens which was compounded by state lies, propaganda and cover up…” (Tony Doherty — Son of Patrick Doherty, murdered on Bloody Sunday).
Entry Requirements: 15+

The return of Hillsborough Law to parliament is a much-needed antidote to a summer marked by constant reminders of the state's tendency to skirt accountability for deaths and rollback safeguards designed to protect us all.

Over the summer, significant legal changes on police accountability for the use of force were made concrete while the ninth anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire highlighted the government’s failure to create a system to prevent such a disaster from happening again. At the same time, an independent inspection found prisons in England and Wales to be vermin-infested and vastly overcrowded, exposing the state’s lack of action to implement change.

This is not new – what is happening now reflects historical and complex patterns.

Following sold-out screenings at Rich Mix and the Castle Cinema, we are delighted to distribute our documentary for free to help connect the past and the present in an era of misinformation. Alongside the film, you can access the accompanying education pack to facilitate learning, group discussion and assistance in organising a screening. The film and the pack are perfect resources for sixth formers, university students, community groups, and film clubs alike.

“We should never underestimate the lengths that the British state will go to silence and crack down on dissent and non violent protest... We made this film, The Day Innocence Died, about the aftermath of a civil rights march... and the British state responded by opening fire and murdering 14 people.”

In a vital conversation, co-director Richard York of the Rainbow Collective breaks down the cyclical nature of state oppression. The Day Innocence Died documents the immediate legacy of the Bloody Sunday massacre—a moment where a community marching for equal rights and better living conditions under military occupation was met with lethal state violence.

York warns that the historical lengths the state went to then are directly mirrored in the present day. As modern public authorities increasingly weaponize the courts to hold peaceful climate, anti-war, and human rights protesters on extended remand or threaten them with severe terror charges, the message remains clear: state self-preservation always target dissent first.
