Some people travel to relax.

We travel to do things that usually begin with a safety briefing. 😂

Swipe through and decide: are we your kind of travelers… or are you staying by the pool? 😆 →

Family travel with kids doesn’t always look very relaxing around here. 😆 As a homeschooling family, we’re usually drawn to outdoor adventures, wildlife experiences, hands-on learning, and unique things to do with kids that turn a family trip into something they’ll actually remember.

Reynisfjara’s black sand beach is breathtaking, but its powerful sneaker waves can rush far up the shore without warning.

So yes, we took the kids to a beach where staying away from the water was the main activity.

We paid to sit silently in a pitch-black cave and stare at glowworms.

Technically, they’re larvae… which sounds significantly less magical than the glowing sky they create underground. 😂

At Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon, we zipped into full-body flotation suits and climbed into a tiny Zodiac boat to weave between floating icebergs.

Nothing says family vacation like dressing everyone as flotation marshmallows and heading straight toward the ice 😂

Yellowstone is full of bubbling mud, steaming ground, geothermal pools, and the unmistakable smell of sulfur.

Which means we spent a surprising amount of the trip asking, “Was that you or the volcano?” 😂

We’ve learned that “you probably won’t see one” is not a warning.

It’s an invitation to rearrange the entire day around a whale, puffin, kiwi, or any other creature with absolutely no respect for our itinerary. 😆

At Camp Barentz in Svalbard, walking to the bathroom means being escorted by someone carrying a rifle… because polar bears are a very real possibility.

Naturally, we put it on the itinerary.

We rarely return home rested.

Usually we come home with thousands of photos, at least one new obsession, and a major sleep deficit. 😆

But we always come home with stories.

Some of you understand. The rest of you are relaxing by the pool. 😂

One of the most unexpectedly memorable stops on our Iceland adventure involved a loaf of bread buried underground. 😆

At Laugarvatn Fontana, traditional Icelandic rye bread is baked using the natural heat of the earth. The dough is placed in a pot, buried in the warm black sand beside the lake, and left to bake slowly for about 24 hours.

We watched it being uncovered and cooled in the lake, and then came the best part… eating it warm with Icelandic butter and smoked trout. It was so good. 😋

Somehow, among all of Iceland’s dramatic landscapes, this little loaf of bread became one of our favorite memories. ✨

As a homeschooling family, some of our favorite travel experiences are the ones that help kids understand a place in a completely different way. I share family travel with kids, homeschool inspiration, educational travel, Iceland with kids, Golden Circle stops, unique things to do in Iceland, and nature-based learning through the places we explore. taken in Laugarvatn Fontana by @rainbowsandfireflies

Apparently my husband heard “glowworm cave” and his entire ’80s childhood came rushing back. 😆

He was expecting a tiny underground civilization of these guys in sleeping caps.

The real glowworms looked nothing like the ones he remembered. 😂 The cave, though? Pure magic. ✨

We’re a homeschooling family who loves finding the kinds of experiences that make family travel with kids feel a little magical. I share family travel ideas, educational travel, nature experiences with kids, and unique places worth exploring… like the Waitomo Glowworm Caves on New Zealand’s North Island. If you’re planning a New Zealand family trip or looking for things to do in New Zealand with kids, this one is definitely worth adding to the list. taken in Spellbound Glowworm and Cave Tours, Waitomo NZ by @rainbowsandfireflies

Yes, I’m sheltering them.

From hurry.
From comparison.
From constant measuring.
From the idea that faster always means better.

Not from the world.

Just from carrying more of it than they need to. 🌿✨

“If your kids don’t go to school… what do they do?”

They follow curiosity.

They read maps, explore tidepools, ask questions in museums, notice birds in the backyard, and learn from the people and places around them.

Sometimes the lesson happens on a train ride or a mountain trail.
Sometimes it happens at the library, in the kitchen, or on an ordinary walk close to home.

This isn’t about skipping learning.
It’s about recognizing how much of it happens through living.

Call it unschool, worldschool, or wild learning.

We just call it living and learning as we go. 🧭✨

Australia Zoo felt like more than a day with animals.

It felt like stepping inside a mission.

Steve Irwin’s words in these audio clips stopped me a little… because he wasn’t just talking about wildlife. He was talking about what we choose to value. What we teach our children to notice. What kind of world we hope they’ll care enough to protect.

And that’s what I loved most about this day.

The kids didn’t just see crocodiles, kangaroos, koalas, and reptiles. They saw care in action. They saw that conservation isn’t only a big word or a faraway idea. It’s keepers, rescues, hospitals, education, gentleness, courage, and people choosing to protect what can’t protect itself.

That kind of learning stays with them differently.

Because before children can protect the wild, they have to feel connected to it.

And maybe that’s the real gift of places like this… not just showing kids animals, but helping them understand that they have a part to play in caring for the world.

We don’t travel to escape life.
We travel so we don’t miss it.

So we don’t miss the way a sunset stretches across a new sky,
or the sound of laughter echoing down unfamiliar hallways.
So we don’t miss who we are
when the clocks stop mattering and the road leads somewhere magical.

This isn’t about checking out.
It’s about tuning in…
to each other, to the world, to the moments that remind us what living really feels like.

Because life moves fast.
But when we wander together, we slow it down just enough
to feel it all. ✨

A beautiful life can still hold hard seasons.

You can be grateful for the good, creating beautiful moments, making memories, showing up for the people you love… and still be quietly trying to find your way through something hard.

Beauty doesn’t cancel out pain.

Most of us are carrying more than we say, which is why kindness matters so much.

So be gentle.
With yourself.
With others.

Canadian Rockies highlights worth saving 🇨🇦✨

A few stops we loved around Banff:

• Columbia Icefield / Athabasca Glacier // for walking on ancient ice
• Banff Gondola // for big mountain views without a long hike
• Bow River bridge area in downtown Banff // for easy exploring and rainy-day rockhounding
• Lake Minnewanka Cruise // for lake views, mountain scenery, and hidden stories beneath the water
• Banff golf course area // for spotting elk at twilight
• Johnston Canyon // for waterfalls, catwalks, and a kid-friendly hike
• Fairmont Banff Springs area // for sunset wandering, skipping rocks, and mountain views
• Moose Hotel & Suites // for rooftop hot pool views after a full day outside

The magic wasn’t in one big moment. It was everywhere. ✨

We weren’t made for this much rush.
This much noise.
This much constant proving.
Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is pause.
Step outside.
Take off our shoes.
And remember… we belong to the earth, too.
It’s not always about doing more.
It’s about coming back to what’s real.
To ourselves.
To each other.
To the wind, the sky, the stillness that never stopped waiting.

We’ve filled these shelves with games and art and stories…
but it’s never really been about what’s here.

It’s about the time spent together…
learning, creating, wondering. 🌿

And while so many sparks begin in this room,
the best lessons often unfold far beyond it…
in forests, on sidewalks, beneath open skies. ✨

Homeschooling doesn’t need to look a certain way.
It just needs love, curiosity,
and space for wonder to grow.
