Once again, someone falls in their first falling – fall of the two bodies, of the two eyes, of four green eyes or eight green eyes if we count those born in the mirror (at midnight, in the purest fear, in loss), you haven’t been able to recognize the voice of your dull silence, to behold the earthly messages scrawled in the middle of one mad state, when the body is a glass and from ourselves and from the other we drink some sort of impossible water.

Last month, following Belgium being the only team to score a goal against Spain even though they ultimately lost, my soundscape “Another One” was played/performed live along with Ansona Ching and Claire Bartleman for Dillon de Give’s The Production of a Routine performance at the Let down Reflex curated by Amber Berson and Juliana Driever at @fofagallery Dillon was incredibly supportive and generous in giving us carte blanche with how to approach performing our bedtime routines. I knew immediately I wanted a chaotic audio piece made of the podcasts and audio stories O– listens to for hours before bed.

Imagine two hours with several performers in a black box with many kids and @cbartleman brought her daughter’s cozy bed! And O–‘s daycare friend came and the two of them (featured in the photos) really took over the “show”

The temporal wildness of parenting I can no longer live without and love so so much.

Another One! is a conceptual soundscape inspired by the ubiquitous ambience of audio stories and podcasts in my family’s life. The title is a phrase, O— my 4-year-old commands between episodes to listen more. It is also a phrase, when it’s past everyone’s bedtime, her dad and I brace for knowing she’s not yet asleep.

While parenting is not martyrdom, sleep, or lack of, is one of those things that ensnares many parents. Our family has to continually adapt our boundaries to welcome the sleep routines that emerge. What began as one audio story before bedtime evolved into a repetitive routine of listening to a selection of audio stories for hours and hours after already reading books to sleep, upon returning home from daycare, or any other relaxation-coded time.

Another One! consists of 31 episodes of ten audio stories/podcasts chosen by O— with help from S—, her 10-year-old bunkbed sharing sibling. It begins with Maurice Sendak’s Little Bear to mirror the start of O—’s journey with listening as part of her bedtime ritual. The soundscape undulates and over time accretes into a cacophony of the various audio elements, until they are no longer distinguishable.

In 2023 I wrote a piece for the CBC lamenting summer because of wildfires. I think my children removed it from the grid as I couldn’t find it but it’s apt as ever, and probably will be every summer now, so I’m reposting. We have to stop this. Don’t we ? We are living a polycrisis. by @raisecain

Hi! I wrote about how my insightful kids helped me recognize and grapple with the work I have been doing at ‘creating belonging’ as an immigrant to Canada. How for so long I thought I was building a moat around me cos being Canadian couldn’t be anything but xenophobic Western white settler colonialism. But a moat just reinforces Otherness—we need genuine reparations and a future for everyone’s children and for that I think we have to put in the work for a ‘Canada’ that makes this possible

The comments and edits back and forth between me and the cbc editor were longer than the piece itself but I hope the message gets across. Of course comments of any critical quality are welcome as I’m fumbling thru all this. :) my dear friends @emiliest had helpful sensorial suggestions that made the piece so much richer and @claudia_sicon helped clarify and make me stand my ground on the importance of Indigenous present-ness rather than just history.

As I was writing the piece I realized how much more there is to say about being a white immigrant, inner city Toronto, childhood bullying, motherhood, acculturation stress, cultural marginality, what the heck “Canada” or even being “Canadian” can be.... by @raisecain

This summer, the incredible @revueesse released issue 109. Among brilliant thinkers and artists, I have a feature article focused on the hydrofeminist and oddkin repurposing of toxic waterways "Recipes for a Liveable Future" with Nina Marina @translucentgrapes @emilyrose.michaud and Bonita Ely.
Thank you to @marlainaread for putting me onto Bonita Ely's work, Katrina Lemma @icarinamali and Sarah Nesbitt @snesbitt_____ for your insightful comments and questions in the earlier stages. Thank you to J for being my 'generic reader,' and the team at ESSE, especially the translators Joanie Demers and Luba Markovskaia who caught small yet significant issues during their process.
Thank you to those who financially support my Substack, which provides me with some income to pay for childcare to do this kind of writing. It really is a dream come true.

#HipHop50 On August 11th, 1973, Cindy Campbell, Clive Campbell's sister found a rec centre for him to throw a “back to school jam” birthday party—1520 Sedgwick Avenue, the Bronx, New York, USA. Clive Campbell is DJ Kool Herc. Thank you to all the women that made hip-hop happen and continue to keep at it.

My family and I were lucky to be in NYC during some of the celebrations and went to two block parties in Brooklyn and under The Bridge in Queens. S also got a Wild Style card from NYPL (yes, you can get visitor cards and take out books from NYPL!), and drew his tag SOUL-ONE in Central Park.

A selection of who we saw perform: Prince Paul, Fu-Schnickens, Da Bush Babees, Roxanne Shante, Onyx, Dead Prez, Mobb deep, Kool g rap, Big daddy Kane, and on and on --- and that's cos little O had to go to sleep.

I cannot express how incredible and life-changing it was to experience. I am so grateful to witness Black originators, pioneers, legends in the places where hip-hop was born in the USA. We owe it and them the world. I do not take this music for granted or allow my children to be such huge fans without educating them and myself on Black culture, the violence of white supremacy, and colonial power as best as I can.

Also, I wish i had Tik Tok as so many people (including some awesome older women who were probably there in the 70s and 80s!!!) were recording S and telling us they're gonna post it on their feed. Hehe. taken in New York, New York by @raisecain
