🚨 Points news: Southwest is changing how you earn the Companion Pass.

Starting in 2027, credit card sign-up bonuses won’t count toward it anymore. That bonus was what made it possible for families like ours to fly buy-one-get-one. With 2 passes for our family of 4, we flew to LA and back for $44 total.

⏳ The good news: if you’re approved for a Southwest card by December 2, 2026, your bonus still counts under the old rules, and a pass earned this year is good through the end of 2027.

But here’s the bigger lesson: in the points world, the rules are ALWAYS changing. Points get devalued, perks end, workarounds quietly disappear (Amex Platinum + United TravelBank and Lululemon, I’m looking at you 👀).

Unpopular opinion with all the doomsday vibes: there are still SO many great redemptions out there. Points don’t earn compound interest, and they were made to be used.

So this is your sign. Use those points. Book the trip. ✈️🌴

LA weekend for our family of 4, mostly paid for with points 🌴

✈️ Flights: Southwest points + Companion Pass = just $11/person in taxes
🏨 Hotel Figueroa: 20K Hyatt points (transferred from Chase). Cash price was $600+
🥐 Brunch at Bottega Louie: covered by my Amex Platinum dining credit through Resy
🏈 And the best part: watching my Trojans win ✌️

We didn’t spend more to earn these points. We just put everyday spending on the right cards and redeemed them strategically.
