Christina is the teacher at Mercy James’ daycare. She has been with us since the hospital opened, 9 years ago. She knows what she likes best about her job (‘When I see them smile, because it means they understand what I’m teaching them!’) and she also knows the challenges well: the children are not just regular students, they are about to get surgery, or are in the process of recovering from one, and they are often in pain. At the Mercy James’ day school and play area, they get to be children again. 💙

Samuel is 7. He loves playing football, eating chips and rice. And he arrived at Mercy James last Christmas, when he started having trouble breathing and lost mobility of one hand. He was diagnosed with polio, an illness that had been eradicated in Malawi for 30 years, until 2022, and that can cause irreversible paralysis, breathing failure, and death.

After a tracheostomy and the use of a ventilator, Samuel was discharged and is doing better. His mum, Lavnis, is happy and relieved for the care he has received at Mercy James.

A bed at Mercy James Centre has many names.

Names like Helena, 11, who has spina bifida and dreams of walking for the first time. Or Linile, a 1-year-old baby born with a birth defect. Or Maria, a teenager battling a rare adrenal gland tumor.

They have all received surgery recently at this hospital in Malawi, which we opened in 2017. It is the only dedicated pediatric surgical hospital in a country with more than 8 million children, and home to its only pediatric ICU.

It takes approximately $50,000 to provide the care and support needed to keep a bed at Mercy James available for a year.

Today, in honor of Raising Malawi’s founder, @madonna , we want to raise enough to provide for 10 beds for a year — a goal of $500,000 — and give hope to many more children in the future.

There is a lot to be proud of when you work at Mercy James Centre. This is a high-quality unit, catering to children from all across Malawi with the most complex cases -as it is the only dedicated paediatric surgery unit and hosts the only paediatric ICU in the country.

Since opening, in 2017, the hospital has made it easier to attend to neonatal congenital abnormalities, and has created the first pediatric ICU beds in Malawi.

Almost 10 years ago, we had a dream. In a country with 8 million children (more than half of the population), only a handful of surgeons were providing specialised care, and there were no dedicated pediatric hospitals available for them.

In July 2017 we opened the Mercy James Institute for Pediatric Surgery and Intensive Care in Blantyre, Southern Malawi, a pediatric surgery and intensive care unit within Queen Elizabeth, the central public hospital. It was exciting, hard and satisfying —you can see some of the work behind the scenes in these archive photos!

Today, the hospital is at the forefront of changing pediatric surgery in Malawi —creating the first pediatric ICU beds, training African surgeons and strengthening the Malawian public healthcare system.
