My dearest Nana passed away this morning. I woke up to the news and everything felt like a lot to process. He had been hospitalized the last couple of days, but finally made it back home last night.

I have never experienced the loss of a loved one until today, so it all feels very new.

But when I think of him, I can’t help but smile. He absolutely hated bland hospital food and the minute he got home, he asked my mom to order him a podi idli from Sukhsagar, his last meal!

He knew ALL the cricket facts from 50 years ago and would dramatically switch off the TV if his team was losing. Sometimes you’d catch him sneaking into the kitchen to steal mithai like nobody would notice. He loveeeed his Sprite so much that my Nani literally stored the bottles in the vegetable compartment of the fridge so he wouldn't find them. Out of an entire menu, he would always order the most unexpected thing possible.

He loved us all so dearly. He spent countless sleepless nights rocking me to sleep when I was a baby. Every Friday, he’d pick me up from school and take me to Nani house for the weekend. I genuinely don’t think I spent weekends at my own house growing up. Sunday mornings meant trips to the cow temple in Vile Parle, where he’d buy me grass so I could feed all the cows.

His favorite food was vada pav and bhel! Lately he ditched chai and converted to a being a coffee person.

I wish he had met my baby, something I know I’ll always carry with me. He was so excited about it too.

If you still have your grandparents, give them the tightest hug.

This year looked a little different for us. Mit was often travelling while I waited at home, missing him at family get-togethers and festivals. He missed home food and warm hugs, building something we both believe in. What a year we survived! And somehow feel stronger than ever.
