I left this shoot thinking a lot about roots, memory, and the parts of ourselves we eventually return to.In his recent interview, John Lumpkin speaks about returning to his Gullah Geechee roots with a deeper understanding of who he is, where he comes from, and what was once overshadowed by silence and shame.I realized while photographing the producer, educator, mentor, and artist who John is that I’ve been on a similar journey myself. The older I get, the more I understand how much my upbringing, my spirituality, my city, and the people who shaped me live inside the work. The very things I once thought I needed to separate myself from are now the things grounding me most. Some people remind you why you create in the first place. Learning lately that looking back isn’t detrimental if you don’t live back there. Can’t tell you how inspiring it is for me to dive through the archives from time to time, the memories of the relentless grind I exerted towards something that I didn’t care about being perfect at, only wanting to keep alive something that I real deal loved. A question I hear almost every day is “How did you get into photography? Did you go to school for it?” Etc etc. Photography just naturally became the way I felt about life and the people around me in it. Because I loved it I got better at it, and so did the people that I document inside of it as they pursued what they love. Looking back reminds me that the love came first, the photographs just followed. by @rakimism

Some of this started before I even knew what style was.I grew up around grown men that dressed like the day mattered. Hard bottom shoes by the door. Cologne in the air. Watches with weight to them. Women too. Everybody carried themselves with intention.Maybe that’s why I’m drawn to spaces like Tweeds and the details that come with them.
