RECAP REEL: start line of the 2026 Colorado Adventure Rally through Day 1! We traveled over 1,000 miles from Anaheim, California to Denver, Colorado and prepped our 2006 STI-swapped Subaru Baja for the inaugural 600-mile high-elevation competition. From adventure-built Toyotas and Subarus to sportscars and 1930s classics, this first-ever event boasted grand views of Colorado as we traveled on tarmac tracks and dirt trails. We led the SOP class most of Day 1 but slipped into 4th place (of 15 SOP teams) during the last TSD leg after a rally reroute to bypass a wildfire. Things can change on a dime with time-speed-distance (TSD) rally! Baja first impressions after Day 1: fast, comfortable, powerful, and ideally build for this rally. It easily maintained exact speeds during competitive parts and quickly accelerated to precise speeds when needed. It got a lot of looks, too! We had lots of very low scores against the rallymaster's perfect 0.0 score. That's tough to do, especially with a new-to-us rally rig. Will Day 2 and Day 3 give us what we need to conquer this competition? Stay tuned to Crankshaft Culture to find out! RECAP REEL: our 2006 STI-swapped, 6-speed manual Subaru Baja reveal and getting to the inaugural Colorado Adventure Rally (CAR) start line!We, @andy_lilienthal as the driver and @mercedes_lilienthal as the navigator descended to Anaheim, California from different directions. We met up at @rallyinnovations (RI) for an anticipatory reveal of our first (of two) rally rigs! This Subaru Baja had been carefully crafted using top-quality components from a variety of companies. It was customized by students of California’s Valencia High School @zenspeed.vhs car club under RI's guidance. We, @andy_lilienthal as the driver and @mercedes_lilienthal as the navigator, brought our A-game for the inaugural 2026 Colorado Adventure Rally (CAR) time-speed-distance (TSD) rally!We piloted a customized 2006 Subaru Baja with an STI-swapped engine mated to a 6-speed manual. It's built by California’s Valencia High School @zenspeed.vhs students under the guidance of long-time partner @rallyinnovations.The Subaru Baja had plenty of power, looked amazing, and rode well. Huge thanks for our partners' support to make this build and effort happen!Fourty-six teams started and out of 15 talented "Seat Of Pants" (SOP class) teams, we nabbed 4th place, just missing the podium, but within the top 25% of that class. It was a tight competition, with 2nd-4th SOP teams divided by only 0.6 seconds at one time! Only 17.5 seconds separated the top four SOP teams once done. The CAR SOP class uses no computers, calculators, or time calculations. We got 5 perfect 0.0s and 52 of the total 119 checkpoints were under 1.0 seconds off the rallymaster's perfect 0.0 time (20 being 0.3 seconds off or less). It was our best showing to date. 👊It's all about the rally community, great sportsmanship, and helpfulness. We love and appreciate our rally family. We're proud of our performance, and grateful for our partners, family, and friends.
