Introducing the Ralph Ellison Center at Bard College.

Created to attend to and provide for the enduring legacy of seminal American artist and intellectual Ralph Ellison, the Ellison Center is premised on the idea that there is a fundamental relationship between the arts and the making of meaning, and notions of purpose and integrity.

At the Center, students and visitors will encounter artists, writers, scholars, and activities engaged in the pursuit of meaning through the arts and writing while becoming part of a community of practice grounded in conversation, connection, and exchange.

Inspired by the environment that shaped Ellison’s own development as an artistic polymath, the Center seeks to create opportunities for students to explore questions of purpose, meaning, and how they choose to show up for and serve others in the world.
