Where Devotion Meets the Mountains: Journey to Dodital 🪷🏔️

Having this sacred trail on my bucket list for years is one thing, but actually walking it out of pure, unwavering devotion to Ganapati Bappa is a feeling words can barely capture.

According to ancient lore and confirmed by the local priests of this high-altitude sanctuary, Dodital is no ordinary lake—it is the divine birthplace and the very ground of creation and rebirth for Lord Ganesha. Legend says it was here that Goddess Parvati created him out of her own divine essence, and where Lord Shiva later restored him to eternal life. Standing by these emerald waters, you can genuinely feel that ancient spiritual energy.

The 16 km trek pushed every limit:

The Climb: A moderate, steady incline through dense, whispering oak and pine forests, crossing gushing streams and fields of golden Ramdana.

The Pacing: Took 6–8 hours up and 6 hours down.

The Wilderness: From stargazing under a piercingly clear, star-lit night sky at 3°C, to spotting elusive Bharals (mountain antelopes) and finding fresh pugmarks of a leopard and her cub right on the trail.

Some journeys aren’t just about the destination; they are an offering. Ganapati Bappa Morya! 🙏

Step Back in Time: Inside Bagori Village 🪵🏔️

Tucked away in the Harsil Valley near the roaring waters of the Jalandhari and Bhagirathi rivers, Bagori feels like a hidden chapter of the Himalayas left untouched by time.
Stepping into this tribal village yesterday instantly pulled me in—the striking traditional wooden architecture, the biting mountain chill, and air so clean it clears your lungs the second you breathe it in.
Beyond its beauty, Bagori holds deep history. Surrounded by sprawling apple orchards, this is the ancestral winter home of the Jad Bhotia community, who once drove the thriving India-Tibet trade route through Nelang before 1962.
The local families are renowned for hand-crafting pure woolens like traditional shawls and coats on handlooms, keeping age-old mountain traditions alive.
Recognized as India’s very first “Ganga Gram” under the Namami Gange mission, it’s a place where heritage, architecture, and raw Himalayan serenity blend into one.

Another unforgettable stop on this 37-day overlanding expedition. 🚙💨

Where Cinema Met Reality: The Mandakini Waterfall 🌊✨

Before it was immortalized on the silver screen in Raj Kapoor’s 1985 classic Ram Teri Ganga Maili, this hidden cascade in the heart of Harsil was just another secret melody of the mountains.

Standing here today—watching the ice-cold, crystal-clear water crash down over dark rock and emerald-green pines—you can instantly feel why this spot captured the imagination of Indian cinema. Yet, no screen can truly capture the raw, soothing roar of the water and the crisp alpine air of the valley.

A quiet cinematic pause on this 37-day overlanding expedition. 🚙💨

The Cliffside Highway of the Himalayas: The Story of Garhtang Gali 🏔️🪵

Long before paved roads cut through these gorges, the deep granite valleys of Uttarkashi belonged to the Jad Bhotia community—hardy traders, mountain dwellers, and guardians of Garhtang Garh, one of the ancient 52 fortresses of the Garhwal region.

Their lives followed the rhythm of the seasons—spending cold winters downvalley and moving up to their ancestral alpine villages of Nelang and Jadung for the summer stay.

About 150 years ago, a visionary merchant named Seth Dhaniram Ji of the Jad Bhotia community took on an impossible feat: carving a secure trade route across a sheer, vertical granite cliff face suspended high over the roaring Jadh Ganga river.

To bring this dream to life, skilled Pathan and Valdiya labourers were brought from Kashmir. Working against gravity, anchored to sheer rock walls, they hand-drilled, carved, and bolted a cantilevered wooden walkway directly into the mountain face. This engineering marvel became known as Garhtang Gali.

For decades, Garhtang Gali served as the vital artery of the ancient Indo-Tibetan trade route. Herders, merchants, and pack animals trod along its timber planks, carrying salt, wool, silk, and spices, turning Nelang into a bustling frontier trading hub.

Then came 1962.

With the outbreak of the Indo-China war, the entire border area was sealed for strategic and military security. The native Jad Bhotia residents were evacuated from Nelang and Jadung, leaving behind their ancestral homes and ancient high-altitude pathways. The community resettled downvalley in places like Bagori and Veerpur Dunda, where they reside today.

Garhtang Gali fell silent for nearly six decades—a wooden monument clinging to the cliff face, holding the memory of high-altitude traders and a forgotten mountain highway.

Walking on these restored wooden planks today isn’t just a trek; it’s stepping right back into living history. 🥾✨

Where Devotion Met Determination: Standing at Bhagirath Shila 🌊🪨

Stepping into Gangotri Dham today felt surprisingly quiet and peaceful. There were no rushing crowds or chaotic lines—just the cold alpine air, the thunderous roar of the Bhagirathi River, and plenty of time to soak in the stillness of this sacred valley.

Right near the temple sits Bhagirath Shila—a massive stone slab that holds the weight of one of the greatest legends in Indian lore.

According to tradition, it was on this very rock that King Bhagirath undertook intense, unrelenting penance (tapasya) for hundreds of years. His goal? To bring the celestial river Ganga down from the heavens to liberate the souls of his ancestors.

When Lord Brahma granted his wish, the force of Ganga’s descent threatened to shatter the Earth. That’s when Lord Shiva stepped in right here in the Himalayas, catching the river in his matted locks to break her force before letting her flow gently into the world.

Standing next to this rock, watching the glacier-fed waters rush past with complete peace in hands, you realize why this effort gave rise to the phrase “Bhagiratha Prayatna”—a reminder that no obstacle is too great when driven by pure resolve.

One more sacred chapter logged on this 5 Week overlanding expedition. Onward to Gartang Gali! 🏔️✨

Trek 1 of 5: Yamunotri 🏔️

The first major physical test of this 37-day Uttarakhand Overlanding Expedition is in the books.

I hit the trail at 7:45 AM from Janki Chatti with temperatures hovering around 6°C. But within 15 minutes of continuous incline, the mountain cold was replaced by the heat of exertion—the heavy winter jacket came off, and the steady climb began.

The trail to Yamunotri is relentless and steep. I took multiple rest stops to catch my breath, pacing myself as the altitude began to show its weight. By 10:45 AM, three hours after starting, I reached the top—exhausted and drained.

Then came the turning point: stepping into Tapt Kund.

The natural thermal hot spring instantly revived me. In Marathi, there’s a phrase that fits this exact feeling—“Sheen gela” (शीण गेला)—the moment every ounce of physical fatigue leaves your body at once.

With unexpectedly low crowds, the Darshan was effortless and quiet. But the Himalayas always remind you where you are: on the descent back down around 1:15 PM, the sky turned grey, bringing cold rain and hail for a stretch of the return hike.

One trek down, four more high-altitude climbs to go. 🥾🌧️

The Layers of Lakhamandal: History vs. Legend 🏛️

Lakhamandal is a place where archaeological fact and ancient mythology run parallel.📜 The Facts: Protected by the ASI, the current Nagara-style temple dates to the 12th–13th century CE, but 6th-century inscriptions show a royal history built by Princess Ishwara.
The name literally translates to a “zone of a lakh Lingams”—hundreds of ancient stone carvings scattered across the Yamuna valley floor.

🔱 The Lore: Local traditions tie this exact terrain to the Mahabharata’s Lakshagriha (the house of wax). On the stone floor lies a small footprint, held by local priests to be Parvati’s at age 5, marking the start of a legendary 12,000-year penance for Lord Shiva.

🪨 The Science: From a graphite Shiva Lingam that turns into a clear mirror when wet, to natural solution pits in mountain stone revered as divine imprints—Lakhamandal proves that in the Himalayas, faith doesn’t replace history; it wraps around it.

📌Authentic Garhwal on a Platter 🏔️PLATE

True Himalayan exploration isn’t just about the mountain passes—it’s about tasting the soil through its food. After hiking Jabarkhet Nature Reserve, I stopped by Hills-E-Ishq Cafe to dive into genuine, 100% authentic Garhwali cuisine.

Mountain food is born out of necessity, seasonal foraging, and high-altitude sustenance. No fancy garnishes, just pure, rustic regional flavors:

🌿 Stinging Nettle Kebabs (Kandali / Shishoon)

Foraged wild stinging nettle blanched to remove its sting, ground into a nutrient-dense green paste, bound with roasted chana flour, and pan-seared. It’s crispy on the outside, earthy on the inside, and rich in natural iron.

🥟 Swala (Dal-Stuffed Garhwali Bread)

A festive staple in Garhwali households—whole wheat dough stuffed with a spiced paste of local black gram (Urad Dal) or horse gram (Gahat), rolled and fried golden. Soft, hearty, and packed with plant protein.

🥔 Aloo ki Thichwani

The ultimate comfort dish. Mountain baby potatoes are crushed using a traditional stone pestle (sil-batta) rather than sliced with a knife. This releases raw starches that naturally thicken the gravy, finished with a crackling temper of wild Himalayan mustard seeds (Jakhiya).

If you’re driving down Tehri Road near Jabarkhet, skip the standard cafe fare and experience what the Himalayas actually taste like.

Finding Solitude in the Hills 🌲✨Just 15 minutes away from the bustle of Mussoorie, Jabarkhet Nature Reserve is a world apart. It isn’t a typical tourist spot—there are no crowded viewpoints or commercial stalls here. Instead, it’s a peaceful, pristine sanctuary made for those who truly want to connect with nature, listen to the forest, and move at their own pace.I’ve had visiting this reserve on my bucket list for a while, and today provided the perfect window to check it off. More than just a quiet walk, this 2-hour hike served as a great test bed to gauge my fitness levels for the upcoming treks planned on my Uttarakhand expedition.I took the Rockfall Trail, pushing uphill to Flaghill Top and past the iconic Lone Oak, before joining the Leopard Trail to loop back to the main entrance. A quick guide to Jabarkhet Nature Reserve:• What it is: Spread across ~100 acres at 2,000 meters above sea level, Jabarkhet is Uttarakhand’s first private, community-driven nature reserve. It was ecologically restored from degraded land into a thriving Himalayan forest ecosystem.• Flora & Fauna: Home to lush oak and rhododendron canopies, over 150 species of birds, and wildlife ranging from barking deer and goral to martens and leopards.• Trails: Features well-marked, interconnected trails (like Rockfall, Mushroom, Spring, Ridge, and Leopard) catering to different fitness levels. 💡 Pro Tip: Visit early in the morning around 7:00 AM. The air is crisp, the forest is quiet, bird activity is at its peak, and you get the trails practically to yourself. An invigorating hike and a great start to the physical demands of this expedition! 🥾

Gear should work as hard as the vehicle. Function > Hype.

With hours of high-altitude driving, direct trail glare, and upcoming snow runs ahead, good optics weren’t optional. Skipped the flashy stuff for pure functionality—these @mauijim polarized lenses cut high-contrast reflection, kill eye fatigue, and keep the view crystal clear.

Good gear isn’t cheap, but when it actually delivers on the road, every rupee makes sense. 🏔️🕶️

😆❤️Not fluent in Malvani yet, but the razor-sharp sarcasm and sweetness of this dialect are unmatched! Just 4-5 words, but pure top-tier humor. Having a blast reading these:

- Free bread? Why bother working!

Lentils, rice, and pickle—in the end, you’re on your own.

— Spending a dollar to save a dime

- Wedding in the village, and the dogs are barking in excitement!

- Exhausted after doing everything wrong, now turned religious.

- Shivering in the cold, yet bragging “I own 7 fine suits!”

A dead buffalo yields 5 liters of milk! (Exaggerating what’s lost)

- No business here, yet arriving with a lit lantern!

- If every plan succeeded, poverty wouldn’t exist.
