For our May book, we read The Last Bench by Ram Halady and got to chat with him after, which was such a special experience for us. We asked him about Vikki, how the story came together, and of course what might come next because we needed to know.

Here’s a snapshot of some of our members with the author Ram Halady, himself! We are so grateful he could join our meeting to discuss The Last Bench.

What a wonderful story about friendship and community just like the virtual one we’re creating here at The Desi Shelf 💌!

This is what our meetings are all about: good books, good stories, thoughtful conversations, and always leaving with more recommendations for what to read next.

DM us if you have questions about joining. We’d love to have you at the next one!

Hi everyone! Welcome to The Desi Shelf 📚✨ a virtual book club and safe space for the South Asian diaspora.

For May, we read The Last Bench by Ram Halady, and our discussion turned into one of those conversations that kept branching into more questions, memories, and “wait, but what did you think about…” moments, especially after getting the chance to speak with Ram Halady about the inspiration behind Vikki and what might come next.

So yes, we are officially invested.

Find the link in our bio to purchase your copy of The Last Bench, and DM us if you have questions about joining. Stay tuned for all the masti to come.

Honored to make the cut for the display at Pima County Library in Arizona to celebrate AAPIH (Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage) Month - May 2026! 🎈
It is a privilege to be among so many celebrated writers who featured in Oprah's Book Club!
And the Purple Heart Veteran and Senator, Tammy Duckworth, from Chicago, where I landed 37 years ago!
What a journey it has been!😊

Just back from Egypt!
See its jewels before they are destroyed by conflicts and man-made disasters: the Giza Pyramids, Abu Simbel, the Sphinx, the recently opened Grand Egyptian Museum with King Tut exhibits, Karnak, and so many other wonderful temples along the River Nile.

He is a foodie, a die-hard Bollywood fan and, most important of all, he is a great friend. So, what will he do when a friend in need comes to him for help? To what extent will he go to save him?

Feeling Special about a small token of recognition!
Just days after the release of my novel, LAST BENCH, I had submitted to the Best Book Awards in March - and had completely forgotten about it.
Last week, the results came back - Although not a Winner, it was a Finalist under "Fiction-Multicultural".
A shot in the dark paid off!

Raunak’s dad bought a copy of LAST BENCH, and Raunak pulled a chair away from everyone to start reading it right there in the hall - finished reading it in 2 hrs, before my event was even over!
And he loved it! Fastest reader of my novel so far!! And he is only in middle school, already a passionate READER!
