This Kanjivaram has been sitting in my closet for years because I always thought it was too much for me to carry. Finally decided to give it a chance today. The all thread work on the bodice and the zari palla with yazhi and paisleys has my heart.

A saree that needs no introduction, so keeping it simple and letting the saree speak for itself. A regal blue kaal yerangina border with meenakari work, and peacocks on the pallu in alternating silver and gold zari. Just the right amount of drama, with every detail adding to its beauty.

According to me this kanji came from one of the dreams of the master weaver. The one I fell in love with came sans the green veldhari lines. The green veldhari was considered a mistake and I was even given the option of not taking the saree. But sometimes mistakes are brilliant and this green is one such thing, vivid against the kanji and impossible to overlook. The green veldhari cutting through the weave like a beautiful interruption is no mistake in my eyes. The right tinge of drama comes from the addition of large iruthalai pakshis on the palla, their forms spreading across it with a striking presence. Source: @pramoda_sarees by @ramya.vijayakumar

White??? Let’s just say I’m colorblind when it comes to this beauty.

A classic gevu-hued saree, double palla, double borders, and those magnificent annams flowing along the pallu and bodice of the Saree joint… every little detail feels like a journey into the master weaver’s loom and sketchbooks.

Some sarees are just worn. And some make you stop, stare, and imagine the hands, the heritage, and the artistry woven into every inch. @pramoda_sarees by @ramya.vijayakumar

Growing blackberries has taught me one thing - patience matters.

The berries that look ready usually need another day or two on the bush. Store bought blackberries are picked early so they can survive shipping, but homegrown ones taste completely different when they’re allowed to fully ripen.

My beginner tips:

• Full sun = sweeter berries
• Water deeply, especially during fruiting
• Pick only the berries that come off easily
• Wait until they’re deep black, plump, and soft
• If they’re tart, leave them another day or two

Nothing beats eating a sun warmed blackberry straight from the garden.

Black Nightshade Berries (Solanum nigrum)

Notice the difference in today’s video
The plant receiving adequate sunlight produced noticeably larger, healthier-looking berries, while the one in limited sunlight had much smaller fruit.

Nature truly responds to light and environment in fascinating ways

These berries are eaten in some traditional practices in certain regions and are known for being consumed without cooking when fully ripe. They are also often associated in folk usage with soothing mouth irritation and general wellness support.

Important note: Proper identification is crucial before consuming any wild berries, as some nightshade varieties can be toxic.

Nature observation like this reminds us how sunlight, soil, and care directly shape what plants give back to us

Growing strawberries has been rewarding, but they do keep you on your toes!

A few lessons:
• Use well-drained soil and make sure trays/pots don’t hold standing water after heavy rain.
• Check drainage holes regularly—one clogged tray led to waterlogging and damaged some plants after the weekend rains.
• Keep an eye on ripening fruit—roly-polies (pill bugs) seem to enjoy strawberries as much as we do!

Despite a few losses, we’re still harvesting sweet, homegrown berries. Gardening is all about learning and adapting.

Heartbreaking to see this fig branch break.

At the same time, it’s a reminder of just how productive fig trees can be. Figs are one of the easiest fruit trees to grow —low maintenance, heat tolerant, and generous producers once established. They ask for very little and give back baskets of sweet fruit year after year.

Even though I lost this branch, there are still plenty of figs left on the tree, and harvest season is just getting started.

Watch this space for plenty of fig-harvesting photos and updates in the coming weeks! (well, figs! 😄)

Thank you all for reaching out, I went MIA again but to no place other than our backyard.

Black Nightshade Spinach (Manathakkali / Makoi)

Black nightshade spinach is edible when properly cooked and is valued for its rich antioxidants and micronutrients. It’s important to correctly identify the plant, as some nightshade species are toxic.

This plant thrives in warm summer heat and grows best with at least 6 hours of sunlight and well-drained soil.

The leaves have a naturally mild bitter taste, which becomes delicious when:
• Stir-fried with spices
• Topped with fresh grated coconut to balance bitterness

Traditionally, both the leaves and tender green berries are used in cooking for added flavor and texture.

In traditional home remedies, it is believed to help soothe mouth ulcers and support digestive comfort, making it a valued leafy green in many households by @ramya.vijayakumar

Monument a Colom is a must see attraction in Barcelona. Packed with symbolism, each figure on the monument represents:

1. People connected to Christopher Columbus and his voyages.
2. Kingdoms of Spain that backed him during his expeditions.
3. Allegories of exploration, conquest and fame.

The statue of Colom itself points towards the sea, while in his other hand he holds a scroll or nautical chart.

There are four female allegorical figures that symbolize the united Spanish crowns behind Columbus’ expedition:

• Catalonia
• Castile
• León
• Aragon

Around the base you’ll notice figures of sailors, monks, royal supporters and cartographers who helped Columbus financially, politically, scientifically and religiously. Bronze relief scenes depicts the story of monarchs support, Columbus’ voyage to America and his return to Spain.

The lions at the stairways symbolize strength and authority. The monument, built in 1888, also houses Barcelona’s earliest public monument lift, originally hydraulic. It took about 4 minutes to reach the top of the 60 m (197 ft) tall column.

One thing many people notice is Columbus pointing towards the sea, symbolizing exploration by sea.

Another often missed detail, Columbus’ finger is intentionally oversized. From nearly 200 feet above the ground, a normal sized finger would have been hard to see. Monument a Colom, alias the cleverest visual illustration is located at the end of La Rambla, facing the harbor. by @ramya.vijayakumar
