Throwback to the brief period of my life where I accidentally became a full-time artisan in fine leather goods… aka “luggage tag production line, @theroofgardens x @swelldidit edition.”
What started as “just a small detail” turned into me spiritually apprenticing under centuries of craftsmanship, losing track of time, and emerging as a slightly unhinged master of stitching, embossing, and extremely unnecessary perfectionism.

Thanks to my brother @hamzatihouna getting the best leather in Fez and keeping up with me. by @ran4ty

What makes “Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters” so unsettling is not its subject, but its elegance. Paul Schrader understands that decadence is always aesthetic before it becomes political. Mishima treated his body, his novels, even his death, as objects to be composed.

The film refuses realism. Instead, Eiko Ishioka (a forever genius queen 🕊️) builds interiors that resemble states of consciousness: gold leaf, lacquer, impossible reds, theatrical geometries…a very underrated artist in the design world.
Accompanied by Philip Glass’s hypnotic score, the film exists somewhere between stage play, fever dream, and historical portrait.
Yukio Mishima appears not as a biographical subject to be explained, but as a figure constructed through style. by @ran4ty

Henry David Thoreau believed the highest form of walking was what he called sauntering: a walk that exists for no reason other than itself.
Today, that almost feels like an act of rebellion.

Modern world made us forget how to walk. We turned it into another opportunity to optimize ourselves. 10k steps, a weighted vest, an audiobook, a podcast at 1.5x speed. We’re turning the walk to a medium for doing other things, an extra layer of productivity. Even the most beautiful piece of music becomes a distraction between you and the walk. It’s filling the silence before the silence can do anything. The walk never gets the chance to give you something because you already brought something by @ran4ty

Yuriko Takagi for Issey Miyake is one of the clearest examples of fashion photography turning into a travel diary. Across a five year span from the mid 1990s, she visited local communities and asked villagers, dancers and passers by to wear Pleats Please in their own environments. Highlighting Issey’s adaptability and “design for life” philosophy.

Stephen Willats’ 1982 book Cha Cha Cha, documenting the alternative club scene in London in the early 80’s, through photographs and interviews with the organisers and patrons of the Cha Cha Club in Charing Cross.
One of the Club organisers, Scarlett Cannon, ran the door with a rod of iron. The fashion stylist Hamish Bowles recalled that she was notorious for holding up a hand mirror to someone she had refused entry to and saying to them witheringly, “Would you let yourself into this Club?” by @ran4ty

This spread explores how a single letter evolves across styles: stretching, compressing, and flowing, depending on composition, rhythm, and script tradition.
For designers and type lovers, Arabic calligraphy offers a radically different system from Latin typography: letters are context-driven, modular, and dynamic; built on proportion, geometry, and movement rather than fixed shapes.
Historically, these variations emerged through major scripts like Kufic (structured, geometric) and cursive styles such as Naskh and Thuluth, each developed for specific uses. From architecture to manuscripts.

My last Substack post is an ode to the bed: it’s history (through a 1950s Flair Magazine article) and the aesthetics of hibernation (through the paintings of Joaquín Sorolla - Mother)
It’s also a winter break reading guide - a hibernation syllabus if you will. Books on rest and reinvention. On darkness and transformation. On winter as a feeling, an atmosphere, an ending, and a seed. by @ran4ty
