You know what my favorite part of the day at the sanctuary is? The hour before breakfast starts, or the hour after dinner wraps up.

It’s when everyone is comfortable, cozy, happy, and healthy. The property gets quiet enough that you can hear the wildlife creatures talking to one another. And that’s when the magic happens between some of our residents who are different species, different sizes, with four legs or two, ruminants or not. Because when you really stop and watch them, you realize that maybe we’re not so different after all.

We’re all looking for the same things connection, comfort, love, affection, and a safe place to simply be ourselves.

Lucy, our Jenny, and Priscilla, our llama, are a perfect example. In the 2 1/2 years since we welcomed our llama herd to Rancho and I have never seen these two together like this. And Lucy has quite the social life - she also has crushes on Cinnamon, one of our sheep girls, and Finn, our neighbor’s horse <3

It makes me think about what happens here after the last light is turned off and the caregivers head home. When the day quiets down and the animals are simply left to be themselves. These interspecies relationships are beautiful. But maybe what makes them so beautiful is the reminder that underneath all the differences, we really aren’t that far apart.
We’re all just looking for a little connection.

❤️ Join us for our upcoming Gala MOO-lin Rouge and help Mo get the best care possible! ❤️

Mo came to us at just three months old, rescued from a dairy farm after being left critically ill with severe leg infections and pneumonia. We were told that he might not survive and that euthanasia was the best option. But we decided to give him a chance at life.

We bottle-fed Mo for months and worked tirelessly to support his recovery, including antibiotic injections directly into the infected areas and on going cysts that needed to be drained. Through lots of love and patience, Mo has grown into the happy, healthy and very loved boy

Because Mo is immunocompromised, we continue to check his body daily for any unusual lumps, bumps or cysts. We’re so grateful that he has remained clear of these concerns for almost eight months!

Soo, why lymphatic drainage? Gentle lymphatic drainage techniques can help support the movement of lymph fluid through the lymphatic system, which plays an important role in fluid balance and immune function. This gentle, hands-on care is a valuable part of his wider wellness routine. But it’s about more than physical care. These sessions also give Mo a positive, calm and reassuring experience with his human caregivers, helping to build trust and encourage gentle handling.

Now that Mo has reached his two-year old stage, he can get VERY excited around all his favourite humans! :) Continuing to build positive associations with touch and handling is an important part of helping him feel safe, settled and confident.

Mo has already overcome so much, and we want to give him every opportunity to continue thriving.

Gonna toot my clown nose for a sec! It’s almost our 2nd gala at @ranchocompasion (grab your tix!) so let me share a story about last year’s gala.

I had this ambitious idea to make elaborate circus posters like the old-timey freak show Barnum & Bailey posters, except I ran out of time & skills to properly deliver on my expectations so I slapped together some basic posters on Canva and cringed at myself. Once I figured out they’d be $70 each, I tried to convince everyone they weren’t worth the cost and they’d look really bad. My mom pushed back and told me I needed to print them. So the day before the gala, I went to Kinkos, got the price down to $30 each, and had some volunteers hang them up.

I could not predict what would happen next.

Suddenly, at the tail end of the live auction, there was this big commotion on the left side of the room. People were shouting at our Auctioneer: they wanted to buy the posters.

Our Kilted Auctioneer walked over like the ringleader he was and commandeered the spontaneous bidding wars.

A small crowd of bidders started rushing in. See the videos. $500 a pop.

While I had only printed 4, we ended up selling a couple more after the gala, earning our nonprofit $2500+ for POSTERS that celebrated some of our most beloved rescued residents. Bought by people who know and love those animals just about as much as I do and who probably fondly look at them on their walls every day now. (If that’s you, let me know!)

I learned to stop doubting myself so much—I’ve been designing for several years now and I have much to learn, but I don’t suck (+ let me know if you need help!)

I learned that a gala is not just for spectacle, but a place for real support. I’ve known some of the people in these photos and videos for over ten years because of our incredible organization, and have witnessed some truly sincere connections form through the years.

This all makes me SO STOKED for our Nov 7 gala, Moo-lin Rouge, at the old Fairfax Pavilion where yes—there’ll be spectacle (can-can! burlesque! magic!) AND THERE WILL BE POSTERS!!

Montel, our 5 1/2-month-old baby boy! 😂💚

Even when he’s not flipping his lip, he’s got a little underbite going on that reminds us of Moe from The Simpsons. Tell me you don’t see it!

Montel is starting to catch those pheromones ! When goats curl their upper lip, it’s called the flehmen response. They’re drawing scents into a special sensory organ that helps them detect pheromones, chemical signals that tell them things like whether another goat is ready to mate. It’s especially common in the boys when they’re picking up on the ladies scent, although we see our girls doing it pretty often, too!
