Every piece of wood milled in our wood shop has a second life. The excess chips go directly into the plant beds, where research confirms they improve soil structure, retain moisture, and slowly release nutrients back into the earth over years. 🌱

Nothing here is waste. Everything is waiting for its next purpose.

Cada pieza de madera trabajada en nuestro taller tiene una segunda vida. Los excesos de viruta van directamente a los cultivos, donde la investigación confirma que mejoran la estructura del suelo, retienen la humedad y liberan nutrientes lentamente de regreso a la tierra a lo largo de los años.

Six months of silence, and a hundred reasons to break it. 🌱

We spent that time on the ground, building something we could not rush and did not want to announce before it was real. Today we start sharing it, not the polished version, but the actual, working version, the one with dirt under its nails.

From this moment on, we’re opening up the ranch’s inner workings, one offering at a time. We will show you what holds it together, what it runs on, and what it takes to keep four hundred acres functioning like one organism instead of a thousand separate parts.

We missed this. We are glad to be back!

Seis meses de silencio, y cien razones para romperlo.

Pasamos ese tiempo en el terreno, construyendo algo que no queríamos apurar ni anunciar antes de que fuera real. Hoy empezamos a compartirlo: no la versión pulida, sino la versión real, la que trabaja de verdad, la que tiene tierra bajo las uñas.

De ahora en adelante, les vamos a abrir el funcionamiento interno del rancho, un post a la vez. Les vamos a mostrar qué lo mantiene unido, de qué se alimenta, y lo que se necesita para que cuatrocientas acres funcionen como un solo organismo, y no como mil piezas sueltas.

🌺 Colour: striking pink-red flower heads so iconic they even inspired the colour amaranth!

🔎🐜Las hormigas cortadoras de hojas son un grupo fascinante de insectos que viven en América Central y del Sur, y son famosas por su comportamiento agrícola altamente sofisticado. Aquí te comparto algunos puntos clave sobre ellas:

🌱No comen hojas : Aunque se les ve cargando pedazos de hojas, no se alimentan directamente de ellas. Las hojas son utilizadas como sustrato para cultivar un hongo, que sí es su principal fuente de alimento.

🤓Sociedades altamente organizadas

Las colonias pueden estar formadas por millones de individuos y tienen un sistema de castas bien definido:
👑Reina: la única encargada de poner huevos.
👨‍🏭Soldados: protegen la colonia.
👷🏼‍♀️Obreras: se dividen en subcastas según el tamaño y tareas (cortar hojas, cuidarlas, cultivar el hongo, limpiar el nido, etc.).

🗓️En MAYO, las hormigas cortadoras de hojas en Costa Rica y otras regiones tropicales pueden mostrar un aumento en su actividad debido al inicio de la temporada lluviosa ;

🌀Mayor humedad del suelo: facilita el cultivo de su hongo simbiótico.
• Brotes tiernos de vegetación: las plantas nuevas crecen rápidamente, lo que provee hojas más suaves y nutritivas para el hongo.
• Actividad visible: es común ver largas filas de hormigas llevando fragmentos de hojas verdes al nido.

🌙 Vuelo nupcial 🫶

Si las condiciones son óptimas (temperatura, humedad, presión atmosférica), mayo puede coincidir con el vuelo nupcial de algunas especies de hormigas cortadoras:
🌈Las hormigas aladas (machos y reinas vírgenes) salen del nido para aparearse en el aire.

🐜Las nuevas reinas fecundadas caen al suelo, pierden sus alas y comienzan una nueva colonia.
