Annie and Clover, Angora goats.

This was one of those compositions that happened completely naturally. Clover wanted to stay close to her mother, and for a brief moment they lined up almost perfectly. Both were looking in the same direction, while Annie’s silhouette nearly encompassed Clover’s entire body. We couldn’t have posed it more precisely.

For the lighting, we used a Photek SoftLighter as the key, a large octabank for fill, and two medium softboxes to light the background. by @randalford

One of my favorite portraits from my series at the Color Factory. I wanted our lighting to blend naturally with the illuminated arches in the background, so instead of strobes, we used a continuous source to create a soft key on our subject.

Without my trusty wobble stool, I ended up in a surprisingly athletic shooting position šŸ˜‚ 🤪 by @randalford

Bando, a young multicolor spotted Longhorn.

His marbled coat was the shot. Patches of light and dark, with small hits of red throughout, created a pattern that almost felt painted. His young horns had not yet made their upward turn, giving the portrait a wide, angular silhouette that was very different from a mature Longhorn.

For lighting an animal this large, I used a Chimera Octabank as a key light and then filled with a small Elinchrom Rotolux and a couple medium Chimeras to fill the side and clean up the background. A little atypical compared to some of my other setups. The small, more specular fill helped give the coat a lustrous shine. by @randalford

A Direwolf staring back at me?

It wasn’t hard to imagine. There’s something about Hotah that feels like he belongs in another age. As a wolf hybrid, he genetically straddles the ancient and the modern world.

And those yellow-gold eyes are impossible to ignore. There’s an intensity and power in his stare that feels very different from a dog. You don’t just look at Hotah. You sense him and he senses you.

Behind the scenes, Hotah wasted no time making his presence known. The first thing he did when he entered the studio was ā€˜scent’ the couch, rubbing himself all over it and leaving his smell behind so that it was known who runs the ship. by @randalford

The Belgian Malinois is agile, cunning, fearless—and terrifyingly smart.

I wanted to intersperse my portraits of Mars, photographed for my Good Dog book, with footage of these dogs doing what they were built to do—or what they’ll find a way to do if you don’t give them a job. Their speed, intelligence, intensity, and absolute commitment are almost hard to comprehend. Some of what these dogs can do looks physically impossible. It isn’t.

A truly jaw-dropping breed. And almost certainly not the breed for you.

Thank you @29gunner and others for the amazing footage! šŸ™ These are truly special dogs! by @randalford

Kipply and Klover are as special as their breed. Originating in Switzerland, Valais Blacknose sheep remain extremely rare and hold a special place in Swiss culture. Finding not one, but two—and twins, no less—was exciting enough to send me across the country to photograph them.

Following Swiss tradition, both brothers were named according to the yearly naming calendar, which designates a letter for each birth year. Kipply and Klover were born in 2023: the year of the K. by @randalford

randalford @ciaracastro_ for @FosterGrant eyewear šŸ•¶ļø

Ciara’s movement made the shots. The park gave us the perfect backdrop — all that curved concrete meant clean lines almost anywhere we pointed the camera. Using a slightly tighter lens helped compress the background and push those shapes even further toward abstraction.

Swipe for behind the scenes. by @randalford

Buckle up, folks. If you’re into gear and want to know what’s currently in my camera bag, here we go. I like to say I’m immune to gear addiction syndrome (GAS), although this video may suggest otherwise.

Some voices become inseparable from a time and place. For me, Dolly’s will always bring me back to Christmas in our childhood home. Her album, Once Upon a Christmas, with Kenny Rogers was a holiday staple, playing year after year until it became part of our family’s soundtrack. On vinyl, cassette, CD, and eventually streaming, it was always there.

To have the opportunity to photograph her recently was something I could never have imagined. It was surreal.

Dolly was every bit the legend you would expect in person—vibrant, magnetic, quick-witted, and unmistakably Dolly. But what stayed with me most was her genuine warmth. She was kind, loving, gracious, and generous with everyone around her.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have experienced her beautiful spirit firsthand. She was a true icon who made the world better in countless ways. But most importantly, she was a truly wonderful human being.

It was a true honor.Ā

Rest in peace, Dolly. 🩷 taken in Nashville, Tennessee by @randalford
