Hall of Famers Goose Gossage and Ferguson Jenkins were among those who came to #Denver (along with Chicago @whitesox White organist Nancy Faust, inventor of baseball’s walk-up song) for the world-premiere screening of “My Father, Dick Allen,” a developing five-part documentary series on the life of a largely misunderstood superstar who overcame unrelenting abuse and racism on his 50-year path to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. It all went down at @seriesfest and the Sie FilmCenter. It’s my Sunday column (with video) for @denvergazette.

He’s the reason you have a high-definition TV, subscription video on demand and Sunday Night Football. But John J. Sie’s greatest accomplishment, his daughter says, is the recent dramatic increase in life expectancy for people with Down syndrome. How a 90-year-old Chinese immigrant stowed away in a cargo ship as a teen and went on to become the father of digital TV, giving away $200 million to causes like Denver Film, the Denver Art Museum and innumerable hospitals along the way. Sie was presented the Visionary Award by SeriesFest on Friday, and Colorado’s highest-ranking politicians were there to salute him. It’s my Sunday column for the @denvergazette.

🎬 “Cracker Barrel Succession.”

That might be one of the best TV pitch comps I’ve ever heard 😂

In this clip from Set Talks, Randi Kleiner from SeriesFest explains why having a strong “comp” is one of the most important parts of pitching a show.

A great comp instantly communicates:
👉 Tone
👉 World
👉 Audience
👉 Style

When someone pitched their show as “Cracker Barrel Succession,” Randi said she instantly understood the vibe of the series without needing a long explanation.

That’s the power of a strong comp.

She also shares why creators should:
• Keep comps specific and thoughtful
• Avoid overwhelming people with too many references
• Clearly explain why a project works as a series vs. a film
• Show how the story can continue across multiple seasons

Great advice for filmmakers, writers, and creators learning how to pitch their projects effectively.

🎬 Want to get your series in front of the industry?

In this clip from Set Talks, Randi Kleiner — Co-Founder & CEO of SeriesFest — breaks down how SeriesFest creates real opportunities for emerging filmmakers and storytellers.

At the core of the festival:

👉 Over 50 independently produced pilots showcased
👉 Competitions across drama, comedy, and digital series
👉 A live Pitch-A-Thon where creators pitch directly to industry experts

It’s more than just a festival — it’s a platform designed to help creators get seen, get feedback, and take the next step in their careers.

If you’re an indie filmmaker or content creator, this is the kind of opportunity that can open doors.
