📸 Eight pictures. One soul-stretching journey.

From a kid with a dream,
To a dental school graduate in my home country.
Then life said: Start over.

So I did.

I came to the U.S. filled with hope and uncertainty.
I earned my Master’s in Public Health thinking it would be enough.
But the journey had more in store.

I went from bartending
To Uber driver
To dish cleaner
To dental assisting
To dental hygiene
To now—Doctor of Dental Surgery.

This path wasn’t linear.
It was layered with sacrifice, silent tears, and strength I didn’t know I had. Every title earned here in the U.S. wasn’t just a credential it was a chapter of resilience, a testament to starting over, and believing that beginnings don’t expire. To those rebuilding dreams in unfamiliar places: You’re not starting from scratch you’re starting from experience.

Grateful. Humbled. Finally home.

Another day in the chair, another life changed. What feels routine to me is someone else’s dream come true. Be grateful for your ordinary Tuesday, someone out there is praying for it.

It’s all about that challenge. Every tooth is different, every root is unique. Im still learning everyday and I’m always thankful to my mentors and colleagues who help me get better everyday. And you dont get tired of that of that feeling of the tooth moving in the socket that dopamine hit you get everytime. I am so lucky to do this and help my patients everyday. Always grateful 😍

A while back, a patient walked into our office who hadn’t smiled in photos in years. Her crooked teeth made her feel so self-conscious that she’d duck out of pictures, cover her mouth when she laughed, avoid eye contact when she talked. She just wanted to feel confident again.

We got to work on transforming her smile and today was her 6-month follow-up. Even tho I have switched offices she came all the way finding me.

She walked in beaming. Hugged every single one of us. Told us that we didn’t just change her teeth we changed her life.

My first Missouri Dental Association House of Delegates meeting as a delegate from the St. Louis Greater Dental Society and what a way to start here at the Lake of Ozarks.

Proud to have advocated for a resolution that passed which is near and dear to me allowing foreign-trained dentists to work as dental hygienists in Missouri 🙌

If this moves forward statewide, it could be truly life-changing for so many ambitious foreign trained dentists who don’t have to work as a dental assistant only but will have another opportunity for the greater good. Fingers crossed for what comes next! 🤞

Was bummed Dr. Nadershahi couldn’t make it in person, but his video message to all of us still hit different 🙏

Organized dentistry at its finest, the leadership, the advocacy, and most importantly the friendships. This is just the beginning 💪

As dentists, we’re busy but we still make time to keep our own teeth clean. That’s why I keep a water flosser right in my dental office.

This one is by Aqua Floss @aquafloss.co it’s my favorite because it’s convenient and the reservoir is easy to fill with water.

How to use it properly:
💧 Aim just below the gums, right where the tooth and gum meet
⚙️ Use medium to high pressure
⏱️ Spend 15–30 seconds per quadrant

Finally the day came! 🦷✨
The much-awaited extraction course with the one and only @drnekkyjamal 🙌 What an absolute honor to be here in Calgary learning from one of the best.

This course should be a must for every new dental grad who’s truly passionate about providing the best care for their patients. Every dentist striving for excellence and compassion in their work would gain so much from this experience.

Can’t wait to see what Day 2 brings and take all this knowledge back home to help my patients receive the best treatment possible! 💪🦷💉

To my two little brothers my jigaars, my lifelines.

I gave up on this dream once. But you two?
You never let me quit.
You pushed, you motivated, you nagged me (nonstop 😅) and you never let me chill for even a minute.

You reminded me who I was and who I could become.
You listened to every rant, every breakdown, and still knew exactly what to say to get me back on track.

This degree isn’t just mine. It’s ours.
It’s our family’s win. It’s the result of your love, your belief, and your relentless support.

Today, I walked the stage without you physically here but trust me, I felt your presence every step of the way.
And in just a month… I’ll finally get to hug you both the way I’ve been wanting to.

Alhamdulilah! My dream came true today. Today, I became the doctor in the US I once prayed to become. From a hopeful kid from Karachi with a vision… to Dr. Makhdoom, BDS, MPH, DDS.

Gratitude doesn’t even begin to cover it. Walking across that stage, I carried every sacrifice, every sleepless night, every moment I almost gave up and all the love and prayers that carried me through. This hood isn’t just fabric. It’s stitched with faith, resilience, and the support of people who never let me forget why I started.

To my mentors my faculty and my institution who saw my potential, to my family who stood by me, to my friends who became family and to the younger me who dared to dream this is for you 🥹Alhamdulillah for everything.
