Texas Houston South Mission President
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
We Are Moving To Texas! ⭐️

Char and I are humbled to be called with our family to preside as Mission President/Leaders over the Texas Houston South Mission starting July 1, 2024.

We couldn’t be more excited to serve with these incredible Elders, Sisters, and Senior missionaries of the Texas Houston South Area and the local members and leaders.

We love the South and feel so blessed for this assignment at this time in our lives to have the opportunity to lift, teach, build, and serve all those that we meet.

We love our Savior, Jesus Christ, with all of our hearts and are ready to stand as a witness to God’s perfect love!

The doctrine of Christ changes our lives and brings true peace and joy to everyone who seeks to implement it in his or her life.

Never before has this scripture touched my heart and spirit so deeply:

Proverbs 3: 5-6

5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

The Second Mile!

We just wrapped up a powerful zone conference here in Houston, Texas. Our hearts are full!

President Timothy L. Farnes taught:

“A believer or follower might go with someone who compels them to walk a mile.

But a disciple of Jesus Christ goes the second mile.

There is much goodness in the first mile, but there is godliness in the second mile. In the first mile, we might obey God’s commandments out of duty. In the second mile, we obey God out of love, with a pure heart and real intent.”

“And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.” (Matthew 5:41)

Sister Garn and I are so blessed to serve alongside these incredible, faithful missionaries. Every day we watch them go the second mile in their diligence, their service, and their love for the Lord and the people of Texas.

They inspire us everyday - The Best Is Yet To Come!

Days never to be forgotten. 🙏❤️

I’m so proud of our twin daughters.

For the last 26 months they’ve served right alongside us here in the Texas Houston South Mission.

Now they’re heading out on missions of their own to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Yesterday we said goodbye to Sadie, who is off to the MTC and then to San Diego, California, where she’ll serve for 18 months, speaking Spanish.

On September 30, Jane enters the MTC to serve 18 months in the Florida Jacksonville Mission.

That leaves Sister Garn with me and the14 year old twin boys for the last 10 months of our mission here in Houston.

I’m not sure what she’ll do with a house full of boys, but we’ll take good care of her. 👍

My heart is tender, and full at the same time.

I’m so excited for their growth, their faith, and the courage and conviction behind their desire to help others come closer to and invite others to follow the Savior.

“And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!”
Romans 10:15

Never Alone! 🙏❤️🙏

This is one of my favorite paintings by Carl Bloch

Atonement = Never Alone!

It has significant and life changing meaning for me.

I am often asked how do you stay so joyful and full of hope?

Very grateful for the perfect loving example of Jesus Christ and His Atonement.

With so much change and uncertainly in the world I have had many share with me that they have felt troubled, heavy hearted, hopeless, and lonely.

For me it’s a belief that I am not alone and I never do anything alone.

I believe angels!

I have great comfort and faith that we too can pray for help from above and God will send angel to attend us in times of need and that we too are never alone.

As I ponder the deep meaning of the word “Atonement”.

In the English language, the components are at-one-ment, suggesting that a person is at one with God.

There is a Rich meaning found in study of the word atonement in the Semitic languages of Old Testament times.

In Hebrew, the basic word for atonement is kaphar, a verb that means “to cover” or “to forgive.”

Closely related is the Aramaic and Arabic word kafat, meaning “a close embrace” or “tight firm hug.”

Luke 22:42-44

42- Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

43 - And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.

44 - And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

One states that “the Lord hath redeemed my soul … ; I have beheld his glory, and I am encircled about eternally in the arms of his love.”

Never Alone!!!

Called To Serve!

We are so excited for Jane and Sadie! They’ll both be reporting on their missions this coming Sunday.

Jane will be serving in the Jacksonville, Florida Mission, and Sadie will be serving in the San Diego, California Mission — both for 18 months.

These two have been hip to hip their entire lives, and this will be a wonderful season of growth for each of them as they go serve God with all their hearts. We feel so blessed to have daughters who love God and love each other — they truly are best buddies.

We’d love for friends and family to join us for Jane and Sadie’s farewell via Zoom if you’re able:

Today I get to honor my twin daughters — two of my favorite people in the whole world.

Jane and Sadie just graduated high school, and now they’re giving the next 18 months to go serve missions and continue to gain even greater experience serving others.

Jane is headed to the Florida Jacksonville Mission, and Sadie to the California San Diego Mission, Spanish-speaking. 🌴

These two have grown into remarkable women.

They’ve built the kind of daily habits that lead to a very successful life.

I’m so thankful to be their father. More than anything, I’m grateful they have a deep relationship with God and their Savior, Jesus Christ — and that they know how to TRUST Him.

I feel so blessed to be their earthly father and raise these two beautiful girls.

I know they will take good care of me when I am old and grumpy. 😃

Here’s to a tremendous, bright future. I couldn’t be prouder of you!

“You do not live once. You die once. Every morning, life is handed back to you.”

God didn’t save Daniel from the lions. He saved him in the lions’ den.

There’s a difference — and it changes everything.

One of my favorite stories of faith is Daniel in the Lions’ Den.

Daniel didn’t escape the trial. He walked into it with courage. Eyes up. Faith intact. No guarantee of survival — only a conviction that God was with him. And that was enough!

That kind of faith doesn’t just endure the trial. It finds peace in it. Even strength, gratitude, and miracles follow.

Because when you trust that God is already in the den with you, the lions lose their power over your heart. you have nothing to fear for God is near.

The circumstance may not change — but you do.

Sometimes we want God to remove the hard things, the trials, the challenges. But more often, He does something greater — He walks into the den with us.
He sends His angel. He shuts the mouths of the lions.

Not before we enter. After.

Whatever den you’re standing in today — look up, like Daniel did.

Let faith replace fear with peace. Let trust turn the trial into a testimony.

God is never absent. He’s already there.

The trial is not evidence that He forgot you. It’s the very place He’ll show up for you!

Called To Serve!

There are good days… and then there are GREAT days. 🙏

This week, our twin daughters received their mission calls!

Jane has been called to serve in the Florida Jacksonville Mission, and Sadie has been called to serve in the California San Diego Mission (Spanish Speaking).

Two different coasts. Two sacred assignments. One Savior who knows exactly where He needs these two powerful souls.

They could not be more excited about where the Lord has called them to serve.

For the last 23 months, they have already been learning what it means to leave everything behind as they have served here in Houston with us.

Watching their love for missionaries, for people, and for the Savior deepen has been one of the great joys of our lives.

We know that this experience has prepared them beautifully for the mission field this September.

Jesus Christ taught the perfect pattern of discipleship — He never lived looking inward, only outward at all times.

And now these two are ready love. To teach. To testify. To invite. To bring souls unto Christ.

“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation.”

— Isaiah 52:7

What a remarkable time to be a missionary.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is creating 55 additional missions effective July 1, 2026, bringing the worldwide total to 506 missions, with more than 85,000 missionaries now serving across the world.

We could not be more thrilled that Jane and Sadie desired to serve at this time.

Two daughters. Two name tags. Two witnesses of Jesus Christ.

Real Growth!

22 months ago we loaded up and flew to Texas.

We had no idea what God had waiting for us here.

Time moves fast. 22 months feels like 22 days. But I wouldn’t trade a single one.

What we didn’t expect was how much I would fall in love with this place — I feel like my heart has grown three sizes!

The people, the warmth, the spirit of Houston.

New friends and missionaries who have become lifelong and even eternal friends.

A community that wrapped around our family and never let go and loved our children.

And my children. They left everything behind — their friends, their comfort, their familiar world — and they came anyway.

And watching them serve with their whole hearts, grow physically, grow spiritually, become who God always intended them to be…

There are no words.

“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles.” — Isaiah 40:31

They grow up too fast! Cherish every moment!

Life Is Not Fair! (In A Good Way)

But because of Jesus Christ, unfairness does not have the final say.

Elder Quentin L. Cook taught:

“All that is unfair about life can be made right through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.”

Romans 8:18 — “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”

Happy Birthday, Char! 🙏❤️

Life is better with Char!

I once asked her if she believed in angels.

She said, “Yes, of course.”

So I asked if she had ever actually seen one.

She smiled and said, “Every single day — you married one.”

I love how confident she is. 😄

“Not all angels are from the other side of the veil. Some of them we walk with and talk with — here, now, every day… Indeed, heaven never seems closer than when we see the love of God manifested in the kindness and devotion of people so good and so pure that angelic is the only word that comes to mind.”

— Jeffrey R. Holland

Happy Birthday, @chargarn — Thanks for being an angel, and keeping me alive every single day. ❤️

He Is Not Here: For He Is Risen!

Because of Him…

He was betrayed, bruised, and broken—
So that we could be healed, lifted, and made whole.

He died—and three days later, He rose again.

He lives.

Because of Him:

 • Death has no sting.
 • The grave has no victory.
 • We can be forgiven.
 • We can have peace.
 • We can live again.

Because of Jesus Christ, we are never alone.

No matter your burden, your past, your sorrow, or your fear—

There is hope.

There is joy.

There is light.

He lives.

And because He lives, everything changes.

“He is not here: for he is risen, as he said.”

— Matthew 28:6
