Meet Josh P., owner of @barn.owl.vintage

A Boston native, Josh has called Seattle home for the last 25 years. Long before Barn Owl became one of the city’s favorite vintage destinations, clothing was his way of expressing himself.

“I grew up as a bigger dude, and it was difficult to find outfits that fit me,” Josh recalls. “That’s where I started developing my own identity through vintage stores, thrift shops, and army surplus stores.”

Step inside Barn Owl Vintage and you’re instantly met with nostalgia. From worn Levi’s and weathered cowboy boots to timeless workwear and denim chore coats, every rack holds a story waiting to be discovered.

But Barn Owl is more than a vintage shop. It’s rooted in memories, friendship, and loss.
After the passing of his best friend Ethan, Josh found comfort in searching for vintage clothing.

“After his passing, it plunged me into a deep grief,” Josh says. “One of the only things that could bring me joy during that time was finding cool vintage clothing.”
What started as a personal outlet grew into consigning at Fremont Vintage Mall before evolving into a small shop inside Sparkle Bar in Ballard. As the collection grew, so did the vision.

That journey eventually led him to Georgetown, a neighborhood Josh calls “Seattle’s last stand,” where Barn Owl Vintage opened its doors in July 2022.

The name itself comes from a mix of inspirations—a taxidermy barn owl at Sparkle Bar and an old poker phrase Josh learned from Montana card players. To him, Barn Owl sounded exclusive, almost like a speakeasy, somewhere you’d want to discover for yourself.

When asked about the most sentimental piece in his wardrobe, Josh reaches for a green corduroy Cape Cod Technical College hat.

“That hat is imbued with the memory of the last time I ever saw my friend alive,” he says. “His spirit watches over us—from where we started to where we are today.”
In many ways, that hat represents the heart of Barn Owl Vintage.
