The Hadestown film is extraordinary for so many reasons—the work itself, the incredible cast, the stagecraft—but having seen it live 5 times over the years, I knew that part. What blew me away was how beautifully it was filmed. So often, I find, stage capture directors try to be a new element in the storytelling—Brett Sullivan filmed it as if we’re sitting in the theater, which sounds so simple but it’s not.. and it’s so rare! We see all the stage. We see the conductor monitors. We see the choreography. We see reactions from actors not specifically centralized in the scene—he lets Chavkin’s work speak for itself and follows her lead. It’s egoless filmmaking and it heightened everything.
