At the centre of the exhibition is the figure — as presence, image, and bearer of meaning. The works approach the figure from different perspectives: as an expression of personal experiences and memories, as portrait and encounter, as fragmented body, or as a transformed and imagined form.

The title At First Sight refers to the first moment of perception — to immediate recognition and to what reveals itself only upon closer observation.

Across painting, drawing, and sculpture, the figure is observed, remembered, altered, and reimagined. It emerges from personal experience as much as from imagination and an open, intuitive working process in which chance and unintended forms play a role. In this way, the boundaries between the recognisable and the transformed, the familiar and the unknown, begin to shift.

As the gallery’s opening exhibition, At First Sight also offers a first insight into Galerie RANG’s programme and its future exhibitions.

Galerie RANG is pleased to present Anna Francesca Rüstig in its inaugural exhibition, At First Sight.

Anna Francesca Rüstig works primarily with figurative sculpture and relief. She studied at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and later trained in stone carving
in Italy before working in architectural restoration.

Her practice is rooted in a close engagement with material and the human figure. She works with plaster,
bronze, aluminium and marble, using traditional sculptural techniques within a contemporary figurative practice.

Her recent work has become increasingly narrative and concerned with women’s lives and experiences. Care, relationships, friendship, mental states and the body become subjects for sculptural images. Experiences that shape everyday life but often remain private, ordinary or overlooked.

Rüstig is particularly interested in relief as a space between image and sculpture, but also as a medium historically connected to storytelling, commemoration and public memory. This history has led her to question which lives and experiences become part of the images through which societies remember themselves, and which remain unseen.

Galerie RANG is pleased to present Emma Peinhopf in its inaugural exhibition, At First Sight.

Emma Peinhopf (b. 1999, Salzburg, Austria) lives and works in Vienna. She graduated from the University of Applied Arts Vienna in 2026, where she studied Drawing and Printmaking in the class of Jan Svenungsson.

Portraiture lies at the heart of Emma Peinhopf’s practice. In her new series, she visits people in their working environments and translates these encounters into large-scale coloured-pencil drawings. She is interested in how collaboration is inscribed in body postures, gazes, distances, and spatial constellations.

Alongside portraits of real people, colourful faces and fictional characters repeatedly appear in her work, either as drawings or as ceramic figures. Behind their apparent cuteness, they sometimes conceal expressions of irritation or suffering, opening up a broad emotional spectrum. Her work thus moves between realistic observation and emotionally charged, at times surreal, visual worlds. The works are created at Atelier @studio_date, whose name reflects the tension between cuteness and real-life encounters.

Her works are held in the collections of the Salzburg Museum, Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz, and the Tyrolean State Museums.

Galerie RANG is pleased to present Negra Bernhard in its inaugural exhibition, At First Sight.

Negra Bernhard (b. 1986, Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina) is an Austrian painter living and working in Baden near Vienna. After migrating to Austria with her family in 1992, she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Daniel Richter, graduating with distinction in 2022.

Bernhard’s psychologically charged paintings explore themes of memory, identity, alienation, and the interplay between personal and collective experience through dreamlike, often nocturnal imagery and a distinctive colour palette. Her works are held in private collections across Austria, Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, and the United States.
