🎭 5 Arrows: Reimagining Bharatanatyam with Power, Intimacy and Identity 🏹 From 7–9 May, Sydney audiences are invited into an intimate and thought-provoking dance experience with 5 Arrows, presented at the Neilson Studio, home of the Sydney Dance Company. Running for 55 minutes, this work offers a bold and deeply personal reimagining of Bharatanatyam — one of South India’s most revered classical dance traditions. Created and performed by internationally acclaimed Bharatanatyam artist Christopher Gurusamy, 5 Arrows is a striking fusion of classical form and contemporary perspective. At its core lies Mohamana, an iconic Carnatic music composition drawn from the rich history of Bharatanatyam. Yet rather than presenting it in its traditional structure, Gurusamy deconstructs and reshapes the piece — using his own lived experience as both lens and catalyst. Through this process, 5 Arrows becomes a work that speaks intimately of love, lust, and longing. It moves fluidly between lyrical dance passages and abstract, embodied expressions of the face and body, blending codified gesture with contemporary sensibilities. Ancient philosophy sits side by side with the emotional textures of modern life, creating a layered and resonant performance language. What distinguishes this work is its deeply personal foundation. Drawing from his biracial and queer identity, Gurusamy critically examines his relationship with Bharatanatyam, asking how a form so steeped in history can be meaningfully recontextualised for today. Rather than searching for identity, 5 Arrows stands as a confident celebration of what has already been discovered — a declaration of presence, belonging, and evolution within the art form. The production is brought to life by an exceptional creative team. Gurusamy leads as both choreographer and performer, supported by a live musical ensemble featuring vocals by @arj_puvaz , nattuvangam by @ranjeev.kiru , veena by @saumya_veena , and mridangam by @loj_rhythmz. 👉 Continue reading in comments. by @ranjeev.kiru

Tired feet but happy heart after our 7 hour rehearsal this weekend with this brilliant team! ❣️ Each person brings so many layers and textures to our little creative project and I'm always in awe every group rehearsal. And always a bonus to work with people who keep things light and fun (chaotic) on long days like this 😆 Super proud of what we've put together and very grateful to perform it in Newcastle next Sunday!✨️🧿 And for the audiences who've seen "Unbound" in Sydney and are coming back for round 2...keep an eye out for the new additions and surprises in this extended 90min show! Ticket link in my bio! Less than 1 week to go!🥳 by @ranjeev.kiru
