The 2026 AOFOG Congress, hosted by RANZCOG, was the largest obstetrics and gynaecology event in the trans-Tasman in decades - and the biggest Congress in AOFOG’s history.

RANZCOG gratefully acknowledges the delegates, speakers, sponsors, collaborators, volunteers and Congress organising committee who contributed to this landmark event and helped make it such a resounding success.

Collaboration between colleges, societies, and colleagues from across the region is essential to addressing disparities in women’s health, building the capacity of the O&G workforce, and driving improvements across borders.

Learning from our neighbours, who face different health and equity challenges, broadens perspectives, strengthens partnerships and inspires new approaches to improving outcomes for women and communities across the region.

RANZCOG together with ten of its international counterparts co-signed a joint statement committing to advancing respectful maternity care, through education, clinical practice, advocacy and partnership with women and communities.

As signatories our organisations will uphold respectful maternity care as a cornerstone of safe, positive, and person-centred experiences throughout pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period, and as a key public health priority worldwide. We support the principles and recommendations laid out in the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) 2025 statement on respectful care.

The statement was signed during the 2026 AOFOG Congress, where respectful maternity care was a core focus featured throughout the program.

Respectful maternity care is a fundamental right and a shared responsibility. Every woman should be treated with dignity, have her voice heard and her choices respected, and receive safe, compassionate care throughout pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period.

We call on clinicians, governments, health services and professional organisations worldwide to join us in this commitment: to use language that supports trust and collaboration, and to provide the resources, leadership and working conditions that make respectful maternity care a reality for every woman, in every setting.

Sepsis in pregnancy is a serious condition, and early detection and treatment is vital. The Society of Obstetric Medicine Australia and New Zealand (SOMANZ) developed clinical guidelines for the investigation and management sepsis in pregnancy. In the latest episode of Taking O&G: a RANZCOG Podcast, host A/Prof Scott White speaks to Dr Lucy Bowyer about these guidelines and recommendation for implementing them in clinical practice.

They address considerations such as anaesthesia, fetal surveillance, and antibiotics while breastfeeding, and emphasise the importance of beginning treatment as soon as sepsis is suspected.

RANZCOG together with the Australian Council on Smoking and Health, over 30 other leading health peak bodies, alongside doctors, nurses and community advocates have written to Australia's political leaders expressing concern over proposed policies which would make cigarettes cheaper and vapes more widely available.

Australia has a serious illicit tobacco and nicotine problem. It is fuelling organised crime, harming communities and placing pressure on police, border officials and regulators.

In response, the Coalition government - if elected - has pledged to slash the tobacco excise by 80%, legalise and tax vapes and nicotine pouches, and bolster law enforcement in a bid shut down illicit trade.

Slashing the tobacco excise and weakening vape laws will only make smoking and vaping rates go up, leading to more deaths, more years of disease, and increased healthcare costs.

The illicit trade was not caused by tobacco-control policies. It has flourished because organised crime has access to a global oversupply of cheap tobacco. We have allowed far too many tobacco retailers to operate alongside weak regulation and poor enforcement. Criminal groups saw a low-risk, high-profit market and moved in. Making cigarettes and vapes cheaper and available everywhere will not change that.

Australia has spent decades driving down smoking rates. We shouldn’t throw that away because criminals exploited a gap in enforcement and tobacco companies now see an opportunity for more profit.

The answer is clear: stronger border controls, a higher standard for those licensed to sell tobacco, a reduction in the number of stores and consistent penalties across the country, backed by well-funded enforcement.

We must also tackle the ongoing demand for all tobacco and nicotine products by making it easier to quit. That means free nicotine replacement therapy to increase access to practical support for the 95% of smokers who are open to quitting, a commitment to a tobacco and nicotine-free generation and a renewed investment to support hard-hitting public health campaigns on the harms of all tobacco use.

Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) remains the leading cause of maternal death worldwide, claiming the lives of nearly 45,000 women in 2023 alone. Yet with timely care and sufficient resources, most of these deaths are entirely preventable and treatable.

5 October marks World PPH Day – an annual awareness day to unite the global maternal health community in action towards ending these preventable deaths.

Earlier this year, Talking O&G: A RANZCOG Podcast, featured Professor Joshua Vogel in a discussion focused on the 2025 consolidated guidelines on PPH prevention, diagnosis and treatment, developed by the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO), and the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM).

In this excerpt, hear from Professor Vogel on why a consolidated, co-owned guideline in this area is so essential. Listen to the full episode via the link in bio.

Pelvic ultrasounds are often performed to investigate abnormal uterine bleeding, and many other indications. This regularly includes evaluation of the endometrium, to identify risks of hyperplasia or malignancy.

In the latest episode of Talking O&G: a RANZCOG Podcast, host Dr Heather Waterfall speaks with Dr Rosie McBain, gynaecological oncologist, about cystic spaces in the endometrium on ultrasound and the correlation with endometrial hyperplasia or cancer. Dr McBain draws from the retrospective cohort study she conducted to examine this topic, the results of which are published in ANZJOG.

Dr Waterfall and Dr McBain discuss the study's findings, its clinical implications, and areas that require further research. They also address the nuances of clinical studies and the importance of patient-centred, individualised care.
