rapfabulous FACT

Loaded one today. August 31st stacks anniversaries across three different eras of hip hop.

LL Cool J’s *The DEFinition* turns 22
O.G.C.’s *The M-Pire Shrikez Back* and CJ Mac’s *Platinum Game* both turn 27
Fabolous’s *TINC2* and the KRS-One/True Master collab *Meta-Historical* turn 16

Three generations of hip hop dropped on the same calendar day. That’s the culture.

Here’s another rapfabulous® FACT.

On August 17th, 1999, Mobb Deep released Murda Muzik. It went platinum, debuted at number three, and became the biggest selling album of their career.

Quiet Storm carried it. Havoc built that beat off the bass line from Melle Mel’s White Lines, and when the remix dropped with Lil’ Kim on it, that became the version everybody knew. Kim came through with a verse people still quote today

Queensbridge and Brooklyn on one record.

38 years ago today, hip-hop got put on national television.

August 6, 1988. Yo! MTV Raps premieres on MTV. Run-DMC hosts the pilot. Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince pull up. And the very first video ever played on the show is Eric B. & Rakim, “Follow the Leader.”

After that, @edlover & Dre took over and the rest is history.

Before that night, rap was regional. After it, the whole country was watching.

That’s a rapfabulous® FACT. Where hip-hop celebrates the music, the culture, and you.

New episode this weekend. Head to rapfabulous.com for days and times in your city.

Buckshot pulled up to rapfabulous® CONVOS and did this from his NEW Album:

“You and your crew be a slave to the sound that I made. If you do what it says, you paid. If not, you broke.”

The conversation covers real ground: how KRS-One shaped his whole flow, getting signed to Nervous Records off one freestyle, starting Duck Down Records after getting shorted on his first royalty check, and the real story behind Tupac, Biggie and the One Nation project that almost happened.

Premieres Sunday night at 9pm on rapfabulous.com, YouTube, Spotify and subculture.co.

EPMD brought them in to add scratches to “It’s My Thing.”

They came back with a co-production.

The label approached Special K and Teddy Tedd about the record. They drove 2.5 hours to Amityville, and instead of just throwing in scratch breaks, they rebuilt the chorus from the ground up. The label heard it back and didn’t know what to say. The LP went gold.

That’s what the @legendaryawesome2 did. They never just did what they were asked.

The Awesome 2 CONVOS is out now.

Special K and Teddy Tedd connected with @micfox.co and talked about all of it. Starting a rap radio show in 1982 with no money and a midnight time slot nobody wanted. Being the first people to play “Eric B. Is President” on acetate, at the Latin Quarter, before it ever hit radio. Breaking “Top Billin’.” Working with Big Daddy Kane, Nice and Smooth, Ed O.G. Paying out of pocket for 25 years just to keep the show alive. And what it felt like when Rakim put their names in a record as a thank you.

44 years in. Still going!

rapfabulous® FACT

This week in 1994, Warren G dropped Regulate… G Funk Era, and Long Beach had the whole summer on lock.

June 7, 1994. “Regulate” had already been running the streets since April on the Above the Rim soundtrack – but when Warren G released his debut album on Def Jam/Violator, it proved G-funk was a full movement, not just a moment. Nate Dogg on the hook. Samples from Michael McDonald. Twelve tracks of that Long Beach slow-burn energy. The album hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and went triple platinum.

Rest up, Nate Dogg.

What hits harder “Regulate,” “This D.J.,” or something deeper on the album?
