After a few days of travelling, I arrived at Treen Farm Campsite. Phoebe told me they had no space, so I said I’d keep going.

I left. And then, for whatever reason, I came back.

I slept in the car park and went to Farm + Fort the next morning for an açai bowl and cappuccino. By the second morning, they recognised me. Somewhere along the way, Raphael became “Raffa”.

Laura, Lucy, Ella, Ally, Monty and later Nicola welcomed me with a warmth that’s hard to describe. I came back every morning. There were cocktails, endless conversations and nights sleeping on the beach with Lucy under the Milky Way.

Then I met Morgan because of our old VWs. One conversation over our engine bays became a friendship. He later invited me to a party at their workshop. I expected a BBQ, two beers and then home.

I arrived and was told: “Park your car like this so you can sleep here tonight.”

That pretty much set the tone.

There were BBQs, Joe and Tess, Baptiste, Pen, Buster and Simon at the food truck, who basically kept me fed.

In between, Kasper and Patrick booked me for a job at Lake Como. I took the Night Riviera sleeper train to London and, by complete chance, Simon was on it too. We had Gin and Tonics before I went to my cabin.

The next day, standing at Lake Como, I realised I already missed Cornwall.

Three nights at Treen became more than two months.

The perfect ending was FNL, where I somehow won Best Watercooled Van.

The next day my cooling system broke… On the phone with Morgan, I renamed it “Best Formerly Watercooled Van.”

Then my driveshaft snapped.

Morgan drove an hour to collect me. Phoebe had already put up a tent for me. Ben and his guys had the van fixed the next morning🤯

I don’t think I’ve ever experienced kindness like that.

I came to England alone, in an old VW, with no plan. I thought travelling was about seeing places. Maybe it’s about finding people in places you never expected to stay.

I planned three nights. I stayed over two months.

I arrived as a stranger. Somehow, Cornwall became home.
