Trabajando con esculturas, grabados, instalaciones y vídeo, entre otros medios, Melsohn pone en tensión la forma en que nuestros cuerpos ocupan el espacio ofreciendo alternativas a través de la contaminación, la colaboración y las propuestas arquitectónicas no jerárquicas. Propone grietas, flujos, agujeros y formas orgánicas que pretenden romper el espacio tal y como está, y reconfigurar nuestros cuerpos tal y como los hemos normalizado son formas en las que la artista provoca políticamente las condiciones sociales y espaciales instanciadas.>>

“Raphaela Melsohn is interested in building objects and environments that provoke the relationship between our bodies and the spaces we inhabit. Working with sculptures, prints, installations, and video, among other mediums, Melsohn applies tension on how our bodies occupy space by offering alternatives through contamination, collaboration, and non-hierarchical architectural propositions. She proposes cracks, fluxes, holes, and organic shapes that intend to break the space as it is and reconfigure our bodies as we have normalized them, are ways in which the artist politically provokes the instated social and spatial conditions”. by @raphaelamelsohn

I finished this work during my @ceramicasuro residency in 2024. I was only able to see it assembled after its arrival in Brazil mid July 2025. Making ceramic works that build structures and change according to how they are assembled together, shifting parts, and affecting/making space started with this work.
I’m happy to be wrapping up 2025 with a new body of work and a lot of ideas to 2026 and beyond.

In 2023, I installed “a hole in the ground” at Marli Matsumoto.
Since 2021, I have been working on drawings and maquettes for this installation. Some time has passed, and I still work on maquettes and drawings for installations daily. It became part of my practice, as it is for many artists I cherish: process, desire, thinking with a pencil, sometimes with clay in between my hands.

“Poltrona tentaculo de ovo”, 2020 is a structure designed for the body to lie down, inviting it to mold itself to its foam while watching the choreography on the monitor. Arranged in a way that favors a psychoanalytic divan, the work presents a video featuring a series of short body choreographies that involve movements of expansion and contraction.

The sound of the video, made in collaboration with @fictionofmatter , spreads through space with a repetitive rhythm, inducing a “trance” (scroll to second photo to see one minute of it).

Lygia Pape’s work “Egg” is invoked in the title, as is Maria Martins’s work byk the word “tentacle”, both homages to great Brazilian artists that deeply inform my practice. This work seeks to synthesize movements of the body’s interiority present in Lygia’s work with the impulse to spread through space of Maria Martins’ sculptures.

Cy, my love
the first work that I knew nothing about and struck me. I had 13, and no idea of what it was. I just kept it in my pocket near my hard as tool for the future.
this is a love letter to that
a love letter as a print that surpasses the intimacy of someone I only knew through the work. Building dialogue with the dead and multiplying by printing the matrix over and over to share it publicly.

“I immerse myself in the poetry of others,” said Adrienne Rich. How to desire and own your gestures when the world seems to be collapsing? We can revolt, dare, love, desire, and intensely make art. Fascists hate art.
It is the first time in 8 years that I have shown this work. When I sat on it, it all came back: the stickiness, the texture, the cold, wet feel of rubber. The erotic touch is the tension between something I want and reject at the same time.
To immerse oneself in the poetry of others requires an uncomfortable and daring gesture. To be infiltrated by this awkwardness of not knowing it.
