There is no directing in the desert.

You wait. You watch. You earn the trust of animals who owe you nothing. The moment you try to control them, you lose everything. So you kneel. You breathe slowly. And if you are lucky, if you are patient enough and quiet enough, they come to you.

These horses chose this moment. I only pressed the shutter.

Some images take years to make. Not in the darkroom. In life.

Over the Dunes did not begin in the UAE. It began 25 years ago, with a young photographer from Brazil who believed that horses carried something ancient inside them, something that no studio could ever contain.

This collection is the answer to a question I never stopped asking.

Every great photograph begins as a walk into the unknown.

The desert teaches you that. You carry everything on your back, every lens, every decision, every year of experience, and still the next dune offers something you have never seen before. Over the Dunes is not a collection of images. It is a record of what happens when you stop trying to create and simply allow yourself to receive.

IRRUENTE - Over the Dunes Collection

Some forces do not cross the earth, they rupture it from below.

A dark stallion charges directly at the camera from ground level, its body a colossus of muscle erupting through white sand as symmetrical plumes detonate from every hoof.

The mane streams backward against swirling cirrus clouds, animal and atmosphere writing the same word at the same instant.

This is not a photograph of motion. It is a photograph of the instant before impact, the last frame the earth remembers before something unstoppable arrives.

Limited to 12 editions worldwide.

I did not take this photo tonight. But tonight is why it matters more than ever.

The UAE is not a place I visit. It is the country that welcomed me, trusted me, and let me witness the quiet power of its heritage through its most noble companions. I have spent years in these deserts, in these stables, alongside people whose generosity and grace define everything I admire about this land.

Tonight the sky looked different. But the spirit of this country has never been something that lives in the skyline. It lives in the people. In the families. In the traditions carried forward with pride across generations.

My heart is with every soul in the Emirates tonight. With Abu Dhabi. With Dubai. With every community across this nation that has given so much to the world.

The UAE was built on courage. That has not changed.

Praying for that War to finish 🙏🏻 🤍 taken in Dubai - دبى by @raphaelmacek

Five thousand years.

That is how long the desert has been carving this animal.

Not breeding him. Carving him. The way wind carves stone, the way grief carves a face, the way silence carves a man.

Look at him. Standing at the edge of nothing. Behind him, his footprints. Ahead of him, more nothing. And still, he goes.

The Arabian horse was not born. He was forged. Forged in a place that kills everything weak, everything loud, everything that asks too much of the world. The desert did not raise him gently. It raised him by taking. Taking water, taking shade, taking every soft thing until only the essential remained.

What you see in him today, the dished face, the great dark eyes, the nostrils that drink the air like prayer, the tail held like a banner, none of it is decoration. All of it is survival made visible. All of it is the desert’s signature on flesh.

The Bedouin understood. They did not own these horses. They lived with them. Inside the same tent. Sharing the same water. When the child was thirsty, the horse drank last. When the night was cold, the horse slept against the body of the man who had nothing else to give. They called her drinker of the wind. They wrote her into poems before they wrote their own names.

And the horse, in return, gave everything. Carried them across distances that should have killed them. Outran armies. Came home, every time, even when the man on her back was dying.
That is what you are looking at.

Not a photograph of an animal in a desert. A photograph of a debt. A photograph of five thousand years of mutual survival, walking forward into the wind, alone, because solitude is what the desert taught him to love.

He looks at the horizon the way the old ones looked at God.

He does not know that he is the last of something.

He only knows the next step.

And the next.

And the next.

They doesn’t ask the ground for permission.

Look at them. In the strike, in the breath, in the becoming. The dust beneath his hooves isn’t damage, it’s signature. It’s the small, violent honesty of creatures that refuses to pass through its own life unnoticed.

We were taught the opposite. To soften the footstep. To smooth the edge. To make ourselves easier to swallow. We learned to apologize for our own weight, to leave the room exactly as we found it, to call that grace.

But this is grace too. This other kind. The kind that lands.

The horse never asks if his presence is welcome. He simply arrives, fully, in the only body he was given, and lets the earth answer back.

Maybe the question we keep avoiding is the simplest one.

Are you moving through your life, or are you landing in it?

Are you being careful, or are you being honest?

Because grace and force, he tells us, were never two things. And the dust we raise is the only proof we were ever here at all.

Aurora.
I want to be careful with these words, because these horses do not need them.

They carry Abu Dhabi in their blood. The discipline of someone passionate about them. The patience of generations. The weight of an inheritance that very few understand from the outside.

And still, when I walked into that quiet, when I lifted the camera, they did the most unexpected thing.

They softened.

The first image him lowered his head, not in submission, but in something closer to confidence. The kind of stillness only a deeply loved animal will give you.

The second image looked at me with the calm of an old soul who had already decided I was no threat to his world.

That is not me. That is you.

Horses do not lie. They reflect the hands that raise them, the voices that calm them, the love that shapes them. What my camera caught was not my talent, it was your truth, made visible.

Thank you for letting me stand inside that silence.

Thank you for trusting me with something that cannot be replicated, faked, or generated.

مكتوب.

Abyssus.

We all have one. The place inside us we do not speak of. The canyon we have walked alone. The hour when the light became a thin ribbon overhead and we were not sure if it was sky, or only memory.

I photographed a horse there. In the deep place. He did not rush. He did not panic. He lowered his head and walked, slow and certain, into the silence at the bottom of the world.
And I wept behind the lens.

Because for years I had been told the abyss was where you ended. And here was a creature, mute and beautiful, teaching me the abyss was where you began.

The light that finds you down there is different. It does not warm. It witnesses. It says, you are still here. You are walking. The stone has not closed over you.

This image is a prayer I did not know I was making. For everyone who has descended. For everyone who is still descending. For everyone who will, one day, lift their head and find that the way out was always forward.

Yesterday, an honor arrived in silence.

Her Highness Sheikha Shamma Al Maktoum invited me to witness her dressage competition at The Royal Stables in Abu Dhabi, and what I saw was not a competition. It was a conversation. A language older than language itself, spoken between a rider of rare composure and two horses who knew her hands.

First the black, all fire and contained thunder, his neck arched into the geometry of centuries. Then the grey, silver, calm of marble made breath. Two voices. One rider. One quiet presence in the saddle, asking nothing more than they were already willing to give.

Dressage is not a sport. It is a vow. A daily practice of asking and listening, of offering the body as instrument and trusting the animal to play through it. There is no shortcut to what I saw yesterday. There is only years.

The Royal Stables. The legacy of a family that has carried horses through generations, treated them as kin, built temples around them. To be inside that arena was to feel the weight of an inheritance you cannot manufacture and cannot rush.

I came as photographer. I left as witness.

Thank you, Your Highness @shamma_almaktoum_10 , for the invitation. Thank you, to the horses, for the lesson. Thank you, to The Royal Stables @theroyalstablesauh , for keeping the discipline alive in a world that has nearly forgotten why it matters. taken in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates by @raphaelmacek

Black velvet. White light. Four hundred years of ceremony folded into a single breath.

He turned, and the room turned with him.

The braid was done at dawn, by hands that have done it ten thousand times. The arch of the neck was shaped by centuries before either of us arrived. The eye, that amber eye, is his alone.

I did not pose him. I waited.

Twenty five years. Not twenty five prompts.

Some things you cannot direct. You cannot ask for them. You cannot manufacture them in post. They simply happen, in the space between one heartbeat and the next, when two souls forget the world is watching.

Olesia stood beside him at Dubai Wold Cup @racingdubai , and something shifted. Not in the frame. In the air itself. She leaned in, not for the camera, not for the moment, but because her body remembered something her mind couldn’t explain. And he met her there. Forehead to forehead. Breath to breath. A conversation older than language.

I’ve spent twenty five years behind the lens, and I will tell you this: the images that break you open are never the ones you plan. They are the ones that find you. The ones where trust becomes visible. Where tenderness has weight. Where a woman and a horse close their eyes at the same time, and the whole desert goes quiet.

This is what no algorithm will ever replicate. Not the light. Not the composition. The surrender.

150 megapixels. Zero prompts. One honest breath.

Some places pull you back not because you left something behind, but because something there is still unfinished.

Dubai has always been more than a destination for me.

It is where the desert first whispered what I had been chasing with my lens for years, where sand and light conspire to reveal what words cannot hold.

Tonight, arriving at the Dubai World Cup, I am surrounded by the world’s finest thoroughbreds, by spectacle and speed and ceremony.

But what moves me most is still the quieter thing: that ancient covenant between horse and horizon that no grandstand can contain.

This is where Over the Dunes was born. And every time I return, the collection breathes a little deeper.

Real Will Always Be Rarer.

New work from the UAE desert coming soon.
