I actually lost 6 shots off my handicap in one week from working on these 4 things:

🧠 1. Start with Smarter Tee Shots

Your birdie opportunities begin before you even get near the green.

Play to your strengths. If your driver is inconsistent, prioritise accuracy with a hybrid or low iron off the tee to stay in play and set up better approaches.

Know your ideal approach yardage. Leave yourself distances where you’re confident (e.g., 100 - 120 yards with a wedge), not just as far as you can hit it.

📌 Pro tip: Use a rangefinder or GPS app to learn typical distances for each club. Commit to targets that give you a clear angle into the pin.

🎯 2. Dial in Approach Shots
More birdie putts come from giving yourself consistent chances from inside 20 feet - not miracle shots, just good enough shots.

Aim for the “fat side” of the green, especially when the pin is tucked. Middle of the green is a win.

Learn to hit a knockdown shot or ¾ swing to control distance better in the scoring zone (100–150 yards).

Practice wedge distances obsessively. Birdie putts come when you’re deadly with your 9i, PW, GW, and SW.

📌 Drill idea: Try the “Ladder Drill” - drop balls at 10-yard intervals (e.g., 60, 70, 80 yards) and try to land 3 out of 5 within a 10-foot circle at each.

💀 3. Don’t Short-Side Yourself
One of the easiest ways to lose birdie chances is by missing in the wrong place.

If you miss the green, miss where you have space to chip and putt (not in the bunker or short-sided rough).

Think about your miss before the swing. If it’s going to go wrong, where is the least damaging spot? Be careful with this part though as don’t turn this into a negative mindset, more of an aid.

🔥 4. Birdie Mindset = Aggressive BUT Smart
Don’t baby the stroke - trust your line.
Play within your game. Birdies come from rhythm, not forcing hero shots every hole.

📌 Try the “Leapfrog Drill” - every putt must go just past the last one, helping you feel speed and control.
