Happy 2nd birthday to Hello, Beech Tree! Thought I’d share some pictures of the actual beech tree and some beech class joy! And this beautiful song is a favorite by Ella Jenkins. Video description: alternating photographs and illustrations of the beech tree and beech class. The first pair show a Park Ranger talking to kids. The second pair show the beech tree with kids playing around it. The third pair shows kids drawing and painting. And the fourth pair shows a bake sale. After that, we see video of the beech tree, a photograph of Rasha, the author holding a copy of the book in front of the tree, and then video of the beach tree in the spring winter and fall. After that, a tiny animation made with illustrations from the book and then the cover of Hello, Beech Tree! #truestory #representationmatters #beech #tree by @rashahamidauthor
Video description: scenes from Rasha Hamid’s picture book, Hello, Beech Tree! Animated illustrations show a diverse class walking, two kids playing by the beach tree, a child holding up heart hands toward the beech tree, and then the beech tree stump with three kids, looking sad and tearful behind it. Then we see the cover of Hello, Beech Tree! by @rashahamidauthor with beautiful, layered, colorful illustrations by @sofiamoore_studio #picturebook #environmentallyfriendly #kindergarten #truestory by @rashahamidauthor
Today is the day! Happy book birthday to Uncommonly Curious, Eternally Autistic. It’s an own-voice picture book that teaches kids (and their grownups!) about what it means to be autistic. As the autistic parent of an autistic kid, and an educator in inclusive classrooms, this is exactly the book I always needed but never had. And it’s available just in time for Autism Month! Please share widely and tell your autistic and allistic friends. (If you don’t know what allistic is, that’s ok! There’s a glossary!) Also, send me pictures of you (or video reviews!) with Uncommonly Curious, Eternally Autistic and I’ll share them! #autism #autismo #autismacceptance #autisticjoy #blackautistics by @rashahamidauthor

I was so ambitious, but then I got tired. Here are some post Sudan and more recent pictures and videos. Happy happy happy birthday to Jibreel. ❤️ (and if you were not in any of these photos and you’re a big part of Jib’s life, it’s only cause the photos I have didn’t fit properly or I couldn’t find them, not because I didn’t want to include you.) by @rashahamidauthor
Next set of photos, Sudan days. Cousins, more cousins, uncles, playing in the Nile, climbing pyramids, strolling in Budapest and Addis with family and friends. Jib was a philosopher, and I quote; Love is the strongest thing. Nothing can break it. He had hot chocolate in every country we touched down in. We counted Black people on our trip to Budapest to entertain ourselves. Coming from NYC and living in Sudan, it was strange to be the only Black people in most places (along with my cousin). I think we got to about 10, including us, my cousin, and one or two people we may have double counted in a square in Budapest. We’re autistic. We count. In fact, when I was learning to drive stick, Jibreel sat in the back seat counting and keeping me posted about how many times I stalled. Jib also had a photographic memory. He even got us home when we were lost one day because he had the Khartoum map in his head. When we got home he said, “See mom? When we work together, we can do anything.” He had his best school year (we love you, Safoya!) and his worst. He finally learned to sing melodies. Thank goodness because if he’d stayed tone deaf, I would’ve been sad. This was the first song he sang the notes in. 😢 There are a million more things to say about those days. by @rashahamidauthor
Jibreel is 25 today! This is photo set 2: pre-Sudan. Jib was a brilliant, very energetic child during these years. He loved to sing and dance and play. He loved squares, square roots, and *even* numbers (not odd). He also fell off some playground equipment and knocked out 3 front teeth, luckily baby teeth. At this age, he thought every white man with a full beard was Kenny Loggins. And we used to read/sing him Will Smith’s Just the Two of Us. by @rashahamidauthor
Jibreel is 25 today! Photo Set 1: Baby Jibby. At this age he was called Jibby, Bang Bang, Jiblets (around Thanksgiving time), Lil Drunk Baby (milk-drunk), and at some time during toddlerhood, Tito (we have no idea why, but he stopped answering to anything else for a while.) We sang Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You to him. by @rashahamidauthor

Happy third book birthday to How to Bird! I almost forgot because How to Bird shares a birthday with some people I know. Image descriptions: Slide one is a stack of books. They’re alternating directions and on every other book, you can see a yellow spine and the title, how to bird. Slide 2: a kestrel sitting atop of wooden post backed by blue sky. The kestrel is a white gray and brown hawk with a white belly with dark polkadots on it. Its face looks painted. slide three: the cover text of how to bird. Blue background, big yellow letters. slide four is a portrait of a pigeon slide five shows two Sudanese women wearing colorful tobes. The background is a yellow orange gradient and there’s a hummingbird flying between and above the two women.
