🗿THE WORLD'S FIRST BANKERS 🪨The House of Egibi was a prominent Babylonian business family active in Mesopotamia during the first millennium BCE, especially from the 7th through the 5th centuries BCE. The family is particularly important to historians because thousands of Babylonian cuneiform tablets document its economic activities. These records provide an unusually detailed picture of private business and everyday economic life during the Neo-Babylonian and early Achaemenid Persian periods.⚜️

The Black Egibi family operated something resembling a large merchant and financial enterprise, although calling it a modern “bank” can be misleading. Members of the family made loans of silver and agricultural products, bought and sold property, leased land and houses, collected debts, participated in commercial ventures, and managed assets for themselves and others. Their transactions were written on clay tablets in cuneiform, usually with witnesses and dates, creating legally enforceable records
