I’m shit at the self-promotion game in the best of times. These days, I’m even more shit. Too distracted. Too worried. Too angry. In a world on fire, it just doesn’t feel appropriate to say, “Look at this thing I did, you guys!”

But that’s ridiculous. I know it. Even though I encourage others to share what their creative selves have brought into existence, I rarely show that same encouragement to myself. Because it makes me feel squeamish. Dammit, Jim! I’m a writer, not a marketing person.

That, and Instagram typically shows my posts to 4-5% of my followers, so it often feels pointless. I’ve got major algorithm fatigue, y’all.

All this is to say that I released another book recently and keep neglecting to plug it. Even though I worked hard on it and I believe in it. It’s about awful things like trauma and gentrification. It’s also about wonderful things like making art, helping one another, and fighting back however you can.

A few years ago, I made up some simple business cards on short notice so I could hand them out at an indie author book fair. They were boring. Plain black and white with a quote from one of my books on the back. Nothing fancy.

This time I decided to do something fun and made some mini zine business cards instead. Boring served its purpose.

Everything in life is just for a little while. Puppies only last for a moment, then become old dogs, and then…

Yeah. And then.

Over the course of her 15 years, Mooshie traveled, had adventures, made lots of friends, did lots of running, and had plenty of great snacks. She also gave us a few scares. There were false alarms and situations where we thought we’d lose her.

But she bounced back. And the following years were a gift. We knew that then, and we know it now. Even though this time, she didn’t bounce back. And we did lose her.

Thankfully, we were given a final gift: one last perfect day. Mooshie’s favorite treat was all the pizza crusts I’d save for her because I never eat them. (Pizza bones!) On our perfect day, she got her very own meatball pizza in her favorite park. It was sunny. Not too hot, not too cold. She sniffed so many things and ate vanilla ice cream with blueberries and was happy. We were happy and so grateful.

Now, we are not okay. But we will be. We had 15 years with a very good girl. It was only a little while, but it was everything. by @rasmenia
