Perspectives at @balancecroatia 😍❤️ While @simplycitymusic took us on the first journey, I couldn’t help but capture these. Paradise 🩵🩵🩵 taken in The Garden Resort by @rastitkac

While I was recording this set for @travelerradioshow on @friskyradio, my head was already in Tisno, Croatia. Yes, also this year, I’m taking the pilgrimage to @balancecroatia and can’t wait to meet old friends, make new ones, listen to my favorite artists and discover those, I’ve never heard before.

This set is my expression of the excitement and expectations.

Check the link in bio for the link and enjoy listening.

For decades I’ve been watching the same discussion loop over and over: “Beatport needs to enforce genres properly” vs “genres are dead anyway.”

Both sides are mostly commenting on symptoms. They rarely touch the root cause.

Genres are useful, but they’re only one taxonomy of music. Online shops usually force us to search and chart almost entirely in that single dimension. That’s why genre charts so often feel diluted by tracks that don’t really belong there – and why it’s so easy for platforms and strong labels to stretch genre tags for reach and charting.

What we – listeners, DJs, and diggers – actually need is not a stricter “genre police.” We need a multidimensional way to describe and categorise music.

Think of genre as one property among many. In practice, DJs, curators and a lot of serious listeners already think this way. We categorise music along multiple axes, for example:
– Genre
– Subgenre
– Mood
– Energy
– Function in a set
– Tempo
– Key
– Instrumentation / sonic traits
– Popularity or “role” on the dancefloor
