Last year I got invited to Poland to do some pictures for Perkele.
Something I would never have dared to do.
But as last year was one of adventure and stepping out of comfort zones, I just went for it and did it.

~The winged hussars~

Yesterday we remembered the Battle for Vienna (12 September 1683)
It was a crucial time as since July only around 20000 men defended the city and gateway to central and Western Europe
Against an estimated force of 150000+ troops of the Ottoman Empire.

The Ottoman Empire had been conquering Eastern Europe ever since Sultan Mehmed II besieged and seized Constantinople, the greatest city of the West at that time. Mehmed’s great-grandson, tried to take Vienna-itself the next ‘gateway’ in the westward Turkish advance across Europe.
Grand Visir Kara Mustafa led the forces and brought with him over one hundred thousand imperial troops and forty thousand steppe horsemen.
In contrast, the Austrian defender of Vienna, Ernst Rüdiger Graf von Starhemberg, commanded fifteen thousand regular troops and some eight thousand Viennese volunteers.
Battered and bruised the defenders of Vienna held out.
Surviving bombardements, mining operations and relentless attacks from the legendary Jannisars.

By September a release force was gathered:

Jan Sobieski, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania joined forces with German troops under the command of Charles of Lorraine.
On September 6, 1683. Their combined army numbered around seventy thousand with Jan in senior command. About three thousand of Sobieski’s troops were the feared ‘winged hussars’ , elite heavy lancers who were at the apex of their century-long golden age.

The Holy Roman Empire were the first to engage the Turks, forcing them to divert troops from the siege. Charles continued to throw his men at the Ottomans until, at four o’clock that afternoon, Sobieski unleashed his hussars. It was possibly the largest charge of heavy cavalry in recorded history. Jan rode in the vanguard.
The hussars and their fellow Polish cavalry—numbering some twenty thousand in all—avalanched down the slopes of the Kahlenberg like a force of nature. Eyewitness accounts describe the charge as an ‘earthquake’, Tons of armored men hurtled down a mountainside with one goal: destroy the Turk and saving Europe from a further Ottoman invasion.

~Fenrir~

Done @noir.gent
Thank you for taking time out of your holiday to come to Ghent and get this piece done 🙌🏻🔥🏴‍☠️

Fenrir, inspired too much fear in the gods to let him out from under their watchful eyes, so they raised the pup themselves.
Only Tyr, the upholder of law and honor, dared to approach Fenrir to feed him.
Fenrir grew at an alarming rate, that soon the gods decided that his stay in Asgard had to be temporary. Knowing well how much devastation he would cause if he were allowed to roam free, the gods attempted to bind him with various chains. They were able to gain the wolf’s consent by telling him that these chains were tests of his strength, and clapping and cheering when, with each new chain they presented him, he broke free.
At last, the gods sent a messenger down to Svartalfheim, the realm of the dwarves. The dwarves, being the most skilled craftspeople in the cosmos, were able to forge a chain whose strength couldn’t be equaled; Gleipnir.

It was made from “the sound of a cat’s footsteps, the beard of a woman, the roots of mountains, the breath of a fish, and the spittle of a bird.”

When the gods presented Fenrir with the light and supple Gleipnir, the wolf suspected trickery and refused to be bound with it unless one of the gods would lay his hand in his jaws as a sign of good faith. None of the gods agreed, knowing that this would mean the loss of a hand and the breaking of an oath.
At last, the brave Tyr, volunteered and sure enough, when Fenrir discovered that he was unable to escape from Gleipnir, he bit off and swallowed Tyr’s hand.

The tied up beast was then transported to some suitably lonely and desolate place. The chain was tied to a boulder and a sword was placed in the wolf’s jaws to hold them open. As he howled, a foamy river called Ván “Expectation” flowed from his drooling mouth. And there, in that sordid state, he remained until Ragnarok.
