Without going into too much detail on what I did, for the past 3 years I had the pleasure of working with At-risk youth. It was something I didn’t want to do but I wasn’t doing anything else because of the world being shut down so I thought “why not?”
I’ll never forget when I was still a trainee and I shadowed while a kid was brought to our therapy room, probably the only place they can be completely vulnerable. He was asked what has been going on in his life. He came to tears and started pouring his heart out. What was crazy was, he told her my story. God is funny like that sometimes. I couldn’t believe it and meanwhile I’m fighting back my own tears. I remember that feeling. Feeling helpless, unheard, angry as fuck, confused , and excruciating heart ache all at the same time for days and years on end.
I was put there for a reason and I decided while working there I’d never waste a day. I wanted to show these boys that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. There is another world besides all the bullshit. They made me want to be a better man so I could lead by example. I wish I could say there was massive change. Unfortunately, as young men we often need to learn the hard way. They knew when it came to me they always had an ear that would listen, a shoulder for them to lean on, and hand that would always pick them up off the ground. When he heard I was leaving a young man asked me what I wanted and he’d paint it for me. I told him Nipsey Hussle. That was someone who I admired that constantly fed, educated, and inspired his community. When it was done I had kids from every hood who would conflict otherwise come together and sign it. When it came to me it didn’t matter whose name shared the paper with them.
We need to do better at educating and motivating our youth rather than abuse them for personal gain. If you made it out the hood and never gave back in any way something is wrong with you. We need to treat our babies better. I don’t just fight for me. I fight for everybody who never had anybody to fight for them. Always remember:
