My hobby is buying yarn and then creating an enormous amount of work for myself. 🧶 But perhaps that’s the point. Slow making in a fast-paced world. I am calling her Lucy. This filet crochet project brings together two of my enduring passions: crochet and anthropology. Although the design is a stylised skeleton, for me she represents Lucy, the 3.2-million-year-old Australopithecus afarensis. She lived during the Pliocene epoch when Earth cooled and dried significantly compared to earlier epochs, setting the stage for future ice ages. Her name also has a wonderful cultural connection. After her fossil was discovered in Ethiopia in 1974, the research team named her Lucy because The Beatles’ “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” was playing at their camp. Stitch by stitch, my Lucy is emerging from the thread. Anthropology, history, music and creativity woven together in a most personal crochet project. Will I wear her? We met Montenegro twice in 2024. First in April, when everything was green and beginning to wake. Then again in December, when the mountains wore snow and the Bay of Kotor turned silver. Same winding roads, stone villages and impossible mountain backdrops. Different light, different mood, different kind of magic. And the same question both times: how can one small country be this spectacular? 🏔️⛰️❄️🌲

Ah yes, lately my favourite crochet technique: panic-buy first, choose a pattern later. About 80% of the time, I select the pattern and then find the colours. A system that worked perfectly well until I apparently decided this whole year that yarn should arrive before the plot. This blanket is for my son, and the colourways containing green are being discontinued, so obviously I had to grab them. Both of them. Immediately. I refuse to discuss this further. 👀 Now I sit, twiddling my thumbs, waiting for the yarn to tell me what it wants to become. Will I choose a pattern tonight? Unlikely. Will I stare at it for the next two weeks? Almost certainly. Why do I do this to myself? Ali and Nino, Batumi. This kinetic sculpture by Georgian artist Tamara Kvesitadze was designed in 2007 and installed on Batumi’s seafront in 2010. The two figures move towards one another, briefly become one, then pass through each other and separate again. One of the things I love most about mosaic crochet is the illusion it creates. Up close, it is a collection of individual stitches and tiny blocks of colour. Step back, and they begin to shift, deepen and move, becoming something entirely different.
