Entrepreneurship often means going outside of your comfort zone

For Jamie Mason and Kevin Chow, co-founders of Rawry & Pohly, that meant taking on a 55-foot-tall mural in Calgary’s Chinatown, by far their largest project yet, and one they weren’t sure how to tackle.

So they did what great entrepreneurs do: they asked for help. A few conversations with experienced muralists helped them get it done. As Kevin puts it, networking and community have been invaluable in getting them where they are today.

We definitely don’t recommend painting until your arm goes numb, but that’s the kind of determination Jamie Mason and Kevin Chow started Rawry & Pohly with.

In the early days, every piece was painted by hand, often late into the night before convention doors opened again. Building the business from the ground up took long hours and a lot of determination, and it’s paid off.

It started with a few painted video game characters hanging in a dorm living room.

Friends that visited asked if they could get one too, and the requests kept coming. So Jamie Mason and Kevin Chow booked a table at a Comic-Con. After one weekend of sales, two students realized their hobby could become a real business.

That business is Rawry and Pohly, and on the latest episode of Corp Eh! Diem, Jamie and Kevin share how they turned a passion into a career, and what they learned along the way.

What happens when two artists build a business, and a marriage, at the same time?

We're back with a new episode of Corp Eh! Diem. We sat down with Jamie Mason and Kevin Chow, the married co-founders of @rawryandpohly, and there was no shortage of things to talk about.

They take us from their early days hand-painting fan art and selling at comic conventions to large-scale public art, including illuminated sculptures for the 2022 Grey Cup and Calgary's largest Chinatown mural, plus a growing roster of conservation art collaborations with zoos and aquariums across North America.
