Omg Hi! The cat is finally out of the bag 🌠

After years of collaborating together, and working with artists and brands in our individual practices, we’re excited to officially launch Raycaster, a creative studio focused on 3D animation, digital art, and design. Our goal with Raycaster is to bring together a network of artists to orchestrate projects at any scale.

The name Raycaster is a homage to raycasting, the first rendering method introduced in 1968 by Arthur Appel at IBM and a pivotal discovery in the 3D visualization realm. This technique casts light rays onto 3D objects to determine visible surfaces and shadows.

With the rapidly evolving state of digital media and AI, we picked a name that felt grounding. We have an immense love for digital art and the 3D community, and are excited to bring our skillsets to a larger, ever expanding table. 🤍 by @raycasterstudio

We think the name Raycaster is so cool because raycasting one of the first rendering techniques developed for old computer graphics (remember the old Windows maze screen saver or the game Doom?) Little rays of light bounce everywhere until you can see the objects in the render, similar to how rendering is now too.

Another big inspiration for the look and feel is long exposure nighttime photography from White Sands National Park.

Starlight travels for thousands of years, sometimes millions, if it is coming from a distant galaxy. So bathed in ancient light, the landscape and desert creatures take a break from the unforgiving heat, and blinding sun.

With an ocean of pixels above and within, the desert comes alive. 🌌

LIFT OFF 🐣 🌠💥

We are super thrilled to introduce Ray (aka Raymond), our studio mascot, the first of many characters by Raycaster. Ray is still learning how to control his powers…and his first attempt backfires just a liiiittle bit.

Ray’s design was inspired by Looney Tunes, Pixar, Marvin the Martian, Final Fantasy, electricity, mages, and light itself.

In our next animation, will Ray finally learn to control his powers or will he find himself barreling towards an unfamiliar planet?

Character design, sculpting, texturing, storyboarding, rigging, animation, & 2D VFX by Sam & Nicole.

No AI was used in the making of this animation. The programs we used include: Blender, Cinema 4D, Redshift, ZBrush, After Effects, Substance Painter, and Photoshop.

We’re excited to share that earlier this year @silentpartnersstudio commissioned us to animate their neon light visuals for the legendary musician P!NK!
🦄🦩🌴💋🍸🐬

We created ten 15-second looping visuals for a series of private shows featuring the pop star. The visuals consisted of neon light sequences created using Cinema 4D, Redshift, and After Effects. They were designed with a limited color palette of red, green, and blue, allowing the lighting programmers to easily adapt the colors for different show environments.

This was a private event, so there wasn’t an official photographer on site. We’ve included project renders alongside an attendee photo of the stage visuals.
