There is a link to do just that in my bio, and there's also a link there to see the latest issue of ANGLES, in which I give you all the latest news, but also talk about the brilliant @hautepop and her book, which I think about every day, as well as interconnectedness, icebound ships, biorealism and more. by @raynayler

I am late. Life has been a lot these last few months, and I am running behind. That means the fall edition of my newsletter, ANGLES IN, has not yet been sent. My lateness is an opportunity, though: you can still sign up (link in my bio) for the newsletter, and you will get the fall edition if you do it today (and probably tomorrow). My focus for this issue is on reading. Don't miss it! by @raynayler

BOOK REVIEW: The Mountain in the Sea by Ray Nayler šŸ™šŸ§¬

This story follows the discovery of a mysterious super-intelligent octopus species. Dr. Ha Nguyen, our main protagonist and a marine biologist will do almost anything to study them and to understand what makes them so different from us.

What I loved the most about this book is how it explores the meaning of life. What does it mean to think? To communicate? To exist? And what happens when we try to answer these questions while our planet is on the edge of an environmental disaster!

Even if it took me an entire month to finish this book, it was definitely worth it! The ideas around consciousness and the meaning of language really stayed with me long after putting the book down. It also reminded me a lot of the movie Arrival, which conveys the same feeling of trying to understand an intelligence that communicates and thinks in a completely different way. If you love Arrival, you’ll definitely love this book too! šŸ‘½

To finish this review, one of the little things that made me pick up this book in the first place was the main protagonist herself! She’s of Vietnamese origin (just like me) and I loved seeing an Asian woman as the main character in a sci-fi book. It still feels too rare nowadays! šŸ’—

My conversation about PALACES OF THE CROW with the brilliant @amgrzybowska is up at @lareviewofbooks We talk about mutual aid, care, the self, community, creativity, and the relationship between writer and reader. Come join us! Below are a few quotes. The link the full interview is in my bio + comments.

"Violence is not the norm; cooperative mutual aid is. Birds are an excellent example of this mutual aid: they live together in large and largely peaceful flocks, protecting one another. A crow does not survive in the forest; a crow survives in the flock. The flock survives in the forest. Just like humans do not survive in the world—human society survives in the world, and we survive as members of a society."

"In some ways, the act of reading is more creative than the act of writing. The act of looking, of interpreting, of taking art into one’s self is this: seeking to change the pattern that makes you up as a person. You open the book hoping it will change you, move you, introduce something new to you, teach you something, or help you teach yourself something, or it will engage you in a way that changes your pattern, and that maybe becomes a part of you."
