Meet our dancer Reiko Ohta! @rayofreiko ❤️
Born in Japan, Reiko began dancing at a very young age. At 17, she moved to Europe to continue her dance training, first at the Royal Swedish Ballet School in Stockholm and later at Codarts University of the Arts in Rotterdam. After graduating, Reiko worked as a freelance dancer based in Rotterdam and Stockholm, exploring the performing arts through curiosity, collaboration, and creative discovery. As she worked in creations and research with Marina Mascarell, Astrid Boons, Heidi Vierthaler, Luca Seixas, and others, she fell in love with the deep research of embodied texture through dance. In 2024, Reiko created 'Spektra', a work of her own. In 2025, Reiko joined Dansk Danseteater, where she continues to enrich our artistic community.

For Reiko, dance is a pure, intrinsic art form that speaks directly—yet subtly—to our sensitivity and imagination. Her interest in science, spatial design, movement anatomy, and dance history continuously nourishes her creativity.

Our first collaboration 『ROUTINES』 premieres tomorrow!❤️‍🔥 Through this version of our fantasy around ballet, we wish to contribute to the current conversations about the complexity of mixing different dance styles/practices and their cultures. Thank you very much @tanztriennale for this such an exciting opportunity🫶

Drawing from breaking, hip-hop, house, and UK jazz dance, the work playfully bends and blurs the edges of ballet vocabulary with freedom and groove. In what they imagine as a late-night studio session, they practice their own version of an alternative, democratic ballet by exploring the in-betweens of different dance practices. Let this session celebrate the countless spaces around the world where dance communities gather, sweat, dream, and move together, united by their enduring passion for dance.

Drawing from breaking, hip-hop, house, and UK jazz dance, the work playfully bends and blurs the edges of ballet vocabulary with freedom and groove. In what they imagine as a late-night studio session, they practice their own version of an alternative, democratic ballet by exploring the in-betweens of different dance practices. Let this session celebrate the countless spaces around the world where dance communities gather, sweat, dream, and move together, united by their enduring passion for dance.

Excited to share some traces of a new adventure:
@rayofreiko and I have been cooking some new •ballet fantasies• for the past two weeks ✨🧪 as part of the Counter Balance reaidency of @tanztriennale Hamburg 2026 during our first residency @hessisches.staatsballett deep down underground in a wonderful dance bunker in Darmstadt.

This year I have revisited the idea of ‘ballet deconstruction’ that I started wondering about back in the school years, as a baby dancer.

Initially I started with the small question of ‘the edges of dance styles’. If you take ballet for example, at which point does a ballet position (or a step) slip out from its idioms? When do we stop recognizing it any more, and start seeing something else? This led me to other thoughts: how do we perceive technicality and virtuosity of dance today? Is it a freedom or a constraint? Is it a tradition to preserve, a convention to break, or a history to learn from? I’m excited to continue this journey of finding new complexities.
