“Perfect” records are boring…when everything is quantized and pitch-perfect, a song can feel like the audio version of Instagram Face. When I wrote The Witch I wanted the sound world to strike the balance between bizarre and enticing. This was well-expressed in the new alt version collaboration with @rayoncitymaterials feat @aoifemaria on Strange Medicine deluxe. Side note: It’s also a great addition to your Halloween playlist :) by @rayoncitymaterials

CW: sexual assault

I wrote “The Witch" as a meditation on what it means to survive, as Toni Morrison says “sometimes not whole, but in part”. I try to follow her advice to be as fearless as one can under completely impossible circumstances. It’s always felt like both: you are more than what was done to you, and what was done to you changed you forever and permanently altered who you might’ve been. The grief is unending.

I filmed this video about how Chanel Miller's memoir Know My Name shaped my lyrics just days before the Cornell case hit the news. Watching it back now, as the same story plays out yet again, gets me tearful.

Thank you @rayoncitymaterials @benplotnickfiddle for lending such care to this alternate version of the song.

OUT NOW! Wherever you listen.
@rayoncitymaterials x @bethmalc

Beth has one of the most singular voices I’ve had the pleasure of hearing. To me, she and her music effortlessly seem to skate between guttural and delicate, traditional and modern, intimate and open.

Such a big fan of Beth’s, was an honor to rework a new landscape to this song of hers.

Beth Malcolm - voice
@benplotnickfiddle - violins, violas
@kraitz - cellos
