On October 16, BIOCOENOSIS opened in Tbilisi — a solo exhibition by artist, researcher, and engineer Nikolay Golikov (@decaprox), organized by the RUBEZH team (@rubeeeeeezh) with the participation of Ray State.

BIOCOENOSIS explores the boundaries between the living and the artificial, humans and the environment, the body and technology.

Here, biological processes become signals, signals become sound, and the human body becomes part of an ongoing exchange between different forms of matter.

We are glad to be part of this project and thank the RUBEZH team for the collaboration.

The exhibition is open until October 23.

An artist, researcher and engineer working with biosignals, living systems and sound. For more than ten years, he has explored the relationships between humans, nature and technology — from performances that weave people’s heartbeats into a shared soundscape to works in which the body becomes part of a machine or a source of nourishment for other organisms.

BIOCOENOSIS

Every second of our existence, we encounter the External, observing what happens through our own lens. We look from the inside out and, in doing so, define where the boundary of the Internal lies.

Nikolay Golikov shifts our familiar vantage point: we find ourselves inside the very thing we are looking at.

Here, we can barely distinguish the boundaries between subject and object, the organic and the synthetic, the permeable and the hermetic.
Here, the roles of consumer and consumed prove fluid: plants eat humans, while larvae feed on plastic that seems to poison living things.
Here, we give our bodies over to machines, opening new pathways of exchange. We become even more permeable: physiological processes transform into signals, and signals into sounds.

This is an endless flow of transformations. Once we notice it, we want to linger to achieve the impossible — to witness matter in all its forms.

This Saturday, join us at Auditoria for an artist talk as part of the programme for Biocenosis, an upcoming exhibition curated by RUBEZH @rubeeeeeeezh.

Where does the boundary between body and machine lie? What happens when physiology becomes an artistic medium and biological processes become part of closed technological systems?

Together with Nikolay Golikov, we’ll explore the role of the body in technology-based art — and how data, electricity and biology turn us from outside observers into active participants in a system.

What ethical challenges arise when our bodies become sources of data? Where does living matter end and hardware begin? What possibilities does this territory open up for art today? We’ll discuss these questions through examples of recent projects and artistic practices.
