Part twelve. Same house, further in.

I have this thing with bathrooms, we’ve established that by now. There’s a quote I keep coming back to, something like, the bathroom is the last private room in the house, the one place you’re truly alone. I don’t remember who said it first, but I believe it. Maybe I did.

And I take it most seriously. This one mimics the energy of the room, it’s calm, just like how I wanted it. An Italian marble that mimics terrazzo stone and looks almost painted up close, warm wood on the vanity to soften all that grey, and the most exquisite tadelakt by Manu and his team at @thumbimpressions. We pondered over the bathtub and ultimately settled on this simple form over a claw foot one. It felt like it wasn’t needed, it needed restraint, not drama. So we stuck to simple basics. Low light when needed. No one interrupts you in here. That’s the whole point.

This isn’t a room you turn all the lights on for, it’s where you drink champagne, alone.

Part eleven. Same house, but let’s start from outside.

This series has mostly been about objects. What we collected, what we layered, what colors we leaned into. But there’s another kind of joy in this project that doesn’t photograph as easily, the actual planning.

The lift opens into a private foyer, and I hated the fact that anyone who paused at the floor would get a peep into it, so we painted it black. In the day, the light coming in from the lift well creates just the drama you need. In the evening, all lights are automated to reveal the real drama. Once you enter the home, a long 25’ corridor with no windows looks into the living room at a distance. Stand there and you get what’s called an enfilade, a straight sightline, all at once, all without moving. That’s not an accident. Every sightline in this house was decided on early, what you see first, what you see next, what stays hidden until you’re further in.

The hallway is lined with art, and my favourite is the alcove we created. Backed it with mirror to reflect some light into the room, then hung more art over the mirror, and to balance it, added a marble plinth that works as a console. That’s three consoles, three materials, all within the same line of vision :)

The designing comes first, then comes the decoration. And neither of them are optional. None of that shows up in a photograph the way a color palette does. But it’s the reason the rest of it works.

Part ten. Same house, but we step out.

This is the first room in this series that isn’t really a room. No walls, no ceiling in the way you’d expect, just stone, iron, and whatever the weather decides to do that day. We had no control over the hardscape of the deck, it was part of the elevation, uniform through the entire complex, and it surrounds the apartment on all sides. The brief to @studio.gaea was simple. We wanted it to feel grown rather than furnished. And she delivered. I may have driven her mad.

The furniture dispersed across the deck follows the same concept as the rest of the house. It’s all been put together over the course of the project. The iron canopy daybed borrows its shape from indoors, brought outside on purpose and is my favourite find, from @mahendra_doshi_est_1974 . The cane chairs in brass from Viya Home, which I incidentally found on @cabanamagazine , are now a staple in all my projects. My favourite coffee table from @sar_design_studio , thrown in with a custom sink designed by us and produced by @cretekala_studio , alongside one of our favourite @rvds.mobilier pieces, the stubby console. This deck, the views, the skies made me fall in love with Hyderabad.

Some days the city shows up in the background. Some days it’s just the trees.

Part nine. Same house, further in.

The family room.

It sits between the master bedroom and the guest room, and it cuts off from the rest of the house on purpose.

Reeded glass in red lacquer on one side. The deck and the park on the other. It shuts the house out and lets the outside in, at the same time. Don’t ask me how that’s not a contradiction. It just isn’t, in this room.

Designed for intimate evenings, it’s layered with pieces that took their time to come together. A custom credenza from @chippiwara with marquetry that mimics a landscape, another ode to the view, sits alongside a tiger marquetry coffee table by @thevernacularmodern , sourced from @roomtherapycollective , flanked by simple mid-century pieces. Vintage textiles, hand-inlaid tables, rugs and objects layered in over time. A room that connects the house, and still keeps its distance from it.

I wrote this earlier today. Wasn’t sure I’d post it. The last few years have been a rollercoaster, and I keep thinking, if someone else had written this and I’d read it, it would’ve given me hope.

So maybe it does that for someone else.

Love,

Part eight. Same house, further in.

This room got built around a beautiful English regency cabinet, picked up at an estate sale in London years ago. You won’t see it in this carousel, but everything else here was designed to work with it. We knew early on we wanted a four poster bed too, and the wonderful folks at @mahendra_doshi_est_1974 came to the rescue, as always.

The other guest bedroom with the expansive windows and park views was about bringing the outside in. This one, smaller and nowhere to look but in. So we leaned in. Because, why not? Mahogany, oxblood, cane. Heavier, darker, a bit more moody with a combination of some of my favorite works. The caning on the headboard, the rust linen curtains, the warmth of the wood everywhere you look, all of it adds up to “feeling” of the room. Small room. Big personality.

Part seven. Same house, further in. Guest bedroom 1 as we called it. This room took a while. I’ve slept in this room more times than I can count, so I know firsthand — I think the most important element of designing and decorating a guest room is the experience you want to create for a discerning house guest. We were clear in our vision. We wanted this room to feel like a hug. Borrowing from other parts of the home, but not overwhelming.
A campaign dresser from @mahendra_doshi_est_1974 that was originally shortlisted for my own home found its way here. Some of my favorite pieces from @phantomhands just fit right in. Hello to my boys @xandlamsterdam . Another custom bed with gorgeous cast brass legs by @colonialcollectionsfurniture and a custom rug designed by us at @rvds.mobilier and produced by @floor_art_ . The custom couch, the art, the accessories. All collected over the past few years because we didn’t just want to decorate. And that is how everything just fell into place.
